ashleywater
Just an update on the RS3 launch which was on the 18th June I had a car specced up and a test drive lined up for this weekend so as to make a decision on whether to pull the trigger on placing an order Had a phone call this morning from my good friend who owns a fairly large VAG dealership chain, to inform me that they had received an e-mail "Grounding" all 165 cars in the UK till further notice due to a fault which relates apparently to running in period? ashleywater
Oil starvation. Audi had a few failures of the last generation 2.5, I hope the cause of those failures has been found So they are grounding all 165 cars because some of them may have this issue? Sounds like the problem shows up in the first few miles maybe Do you have anymore info Ian?
Ian_C
Unfortunately not, simply a bloke saying the same as yourself, receiving a call from the dealer to say the test drive had been cancelled: "Got a call from my local dealer regarding my test drive tomorrow, they cancelled. When I asked why they were a little cagey, but eventually he told me they have recalled all the demo RS3's due to oil starvation problems and cancelled all test drives until the issue has been resolved." Riz
Oh dear, the previous RS3 had plenty of warranty issues to do with the braking system and lack of air flow etc, think it cost Audi a fair few to resolve. Let's hope Audi fix the issues ASAP before it becomes more wide spread knowledge and starts impacting brand image etc. The one thing I don't understand is why the RS3 has a significantly smaller boot compared to the Golf R when both are 4WD and based on the MQB platform. It's true, I have my name down for the Golf R420 & Edition 40 but didn't put a deposit down like some have, can always give it a miss. My ideal Golf R420 colour mmmm either blue or white in 5 door DSG guise. If white I would get gloss black external pack, mirrors etc. Will have to see what options are on the list when it comes out. I keep looking at the Audi RS3 too, that engine sound mmmmm but knowing the more powerful and probably better handling Golf R420 is on the way restrains me. Anybody seen this months Volkswagen Driver Magazine? Edited June 21, 2015 by Riz
Ian_C
8P 3dr + Sportback share the same wheelbase, whereas the 8V 3dr + Sportback are approx 4-50mm different. However, the difference in overall length between the new shape 3 and 5 is actually *less* than the 8P 3 and 5 - the rear axle has simply moved backwards in the cars silhouette. Gives more interior space in the 8V Sportback, but it means the distance between the backrest of the rear bench and the boot load lip is 50mm shorter (similar happened in the move from B6 B7 to B8 - the wheelbase grew by something like 140mm, car only about half that, the boot got shorter but deeper by ditching the full sized spare wheel and dropping the boot floor) However, the 8V Sportback boot is still bigger than the 8P - just. 380 litres, reduced to 340 with quattro, B&O or removable towing equipment http://cdn2.carbuyer.co.uk/sites/carbuyer_d7/files/styles/gallery_adv/public/audi_a3_sportback_11.jpg http://cdn1.autoexpress.co.uk/sites/autoexpressuk/files/styles/gallery_adv/public/audi-a3-sportback-8-boot.jpg http://www.audi.co.uk/content/dam/audi/production/PDF/PriceAndSpecGuides/a3-s3.pdf The really confusing bit is the quattros have a *bigger* fuel tank. Possibly designed in to give the S3 and RS3 a better range? No idea! The RS3 boot cannot be smaller than the shorter Golf surely?
Tipex
With regards to the brake issues, I suppose that's what happens when you put the drive train from what is really a sports car, in to your nans shopping trolley. There have to be compromises as it was never designed to be a sports car, unlike an actual sports car. Edited June 21, 2015 by Tipex

Ian_C
Must do - I suppose the fuel tank is directly below the boot floor immediately behind the rear seats. So the fuel tank must bubble up higher on quattro.... sorry Haldex cars which have the higher boot floor. Its only 5 litres bigger
Riz
Audi S3 Sportback = 340 litres Volkswagen Golf R = 343 litres Volkswagen GTI = 380 litres So the Golf boot is actually bigger yet its not a Sportback/Estate variant. Tipex
Mrs T managed fine for years with her 3 door Polo, and that was with 3 kids. Anyone that tells you they 'needed' a bigger car for carting kids about is talking utter bollox.
