RobK
So my stepdaughter is 17 next month and her mum wants to get her a car for her birthday. Any suggestions for something round about £1500, reliable, slow and not extortionate to insure? If it was reasonably stylish that would be nice - it doesn't help that her school friend was given an R8 for his 17th
patently
Same here. We're looking at VW Polos, they seem to hit the spot

Cuprabob
My Dad had a 2004 Polo 1.2 (55bhp) for 10 years and it was a cracking little car. It only cost £7K new and was traded in for £2,500 in 2014. It only had 28K miles on it. Worth also looking at the ibiza and Facia which can be better value. I've got the 1.0 60bhp engine in the Up and it's great little engine. Great around town.
RobK
I've been looking at some of the "free insurance with new car" deals, but they whack on so much for the finance you might as well have paid for the insurance.

I'm really surprised!

RobK
Who is that with? It was a quote from Flux Direct through Compare the Market. Swinton was next cheapest at £429 but with a higher excess. Edited April 19, 2016 by RobK
Tipex
What about a Lupo? (Or seat/Skoda equiv) I think Mook's lad had one for a while when he passed his test, general consensus at the time was that they are about as cheap to buy and run as it gets. shao_khan
How about a Lupo / Arosa from the same age - the Seat has some nice colour options and it is perhaps a little more 'cute' than the Polo? There is a few 2002 ish 1.2 Polo colour concepts in Yellow, green, blue, might win a couple of points on cool stakes? Citroen Dolly / 2CV (sorry I have to throw this in), but if you can't afford the R8 (you cheapskate), how about total opposite end of the scale and do retro chic? They are slow (mine would only reach 70 down hill), right up there with the Fiat 500 / 127 etc but are holding good money now so its a safe investment i'd have thought. PeterS
Well I spent around £850 on an Audi A2 75 bhp, abs and esp plus a few airbags. And decent visibility on the whole as it's quite high up ☺️

I saw one of those colour concept Polos the other day, can't say I was fan of them when new to be honest but my god they look awful now, that shape Polo hasn't aged well, we were well rid of Mrs T's, cheap plastics, unreliable, tat. eldavo69
Rewind - a school chum got bought an R8 for their first car? Do the parents have a massive life insurance policy on him or something as that'll seem hugely irresponsible when he understeers it into something/someone!!!! NewNiceMrMe
One of EldestMissMe's friends was bought a brand new Porsche Boxster 3.2S for her 17th birthday. Her parents paid for her to go on one of those intensive training course things and a week later she was driving the Boxster around Newcastle. When she got to 21 they changed it - for another, but newer model, Boxster. Another of her friends got a Mercedes SLK 200, again brand spanking new, for her 18th. I don't really see what is wrong with it but I do get the safety angle and I'd not be buying the likes of the Boxster. Other than that, it's their money and I take the view that they're free to spend it as they see fit.

That was 2002. She was dosey as hell and couldn't get to grips with the 'stick in the middle of the car', so her dad sent it to the mini dealership for a service. My mate was instructed to take her down to drop the car off and then go am wonder round the bmw dealer on the same site. In there was her brand new X5 with her personal plate on it, she cried because she thought someone had stolen her plate. Apparently took her ages to understand this was her car. Anyway she hadn't even passed her test and was flying round (with l plates) in the big v8 petrol x5 - whatever size it was in that vintage ( prob early 2003 by then ) maybe the 4.6? Or 4.4 can't remember...... Edited April 19, 2016 by chasdrury
eldavo69
A friend of mine at school's dad was a top end car trader and anyone over 18 could drive anything in his stock on his policy. My mate used to turn up to Upper Sixth in 6 month old Range Rovers, 7 series and the like. He once got pulled over by the Police with 4 of us crammed into a 996 Turbo heading for Bradford City Centre at lunchtime. The officer smugly asked "is this your car sir?" To which my mate replied "I'm 18, what do you think - but here's all the paperwork that says I'm allowed to drive it"
Riz
I've owned and run a Seat Arosa 2001 1.4TDi S for a year or so and it was a cracking little car, great economy and plenty of go. Not sure how much it would cost to insure though as it has 90bhp iirc.
garcon magnifique
When we were 17/18 a mate's dad ran a sales pitch and workshop specialising in used Jags. The "Is this your car, sir?" conversation was an almost nightly event. It was very cool tooling in around in an XJ12, except for watching how quickly it could guzzle a fiver's worth of four star...
