Technically Fog lights are not just for fog, highway code states:

"You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 211)."

Which does not exclude them for use in heavy rain or snow when visibility is reduced.

I do agree with whats been said above and they do dazzle in rain, but having said that which would you prefer - someone getting too close in heavy rain and steaming through the back of you when you brake or staying back because you are blinding them - I'd go for the blinding them everytime.

R I G H T ! ! ! ! ! ! !

At the end of the day, for all of you that spend your time whilst driving in the rain getting worked up about the car BEHIND YOU having his fog lights on or off, please remember this!! The business that really counts is IN FRONT OF YOU!!! and whilst your becoming more and more adgitated about the car behind your more likely to miss the fact that the car in front has broken hard and YOU will be the one running into it!!

Gawd, why do people drive like this!?

Even if the car has its fog lights on, and is driving in the oposite direction, its only for a brief moment that you will be annoyed by this and their for should really just stay focussed on keeping YOUR car driven safley!!

As for you Roops! Dont let them wind you up! I got this with the 160mph post i wrote! beerchug.gif

Yea, but Sam's point was to question why people insist on using front fog lights in ideal driving conditions, ie when it's sunny. The thread then moved on to state that most of us believe that fogs lights are used too often and unnecessarily. Indeed, the inference is that the more you use fog lights in inappropriate conditions, the more likely the individual is to be a Chav!! 169144-ok.gif

TP - point taken, but with the day thing, i have no idea why they do it! But i have to admit, if its dusk, and i want to make my car standout a little more, then yeah, sure i put them on with just the side lights. In this way, it deffinatly makes the car look smoother, but i admit has no practicle use what so ever.

That said, who ever loves practicle surely shouldnt be driving cars like we do!? If you want practicle, but a Volvo ;-)

I agree, people who use the rear fog lamps in normal or reasonableweather condition where visability isnt to badly effected, then they really are unnessassery and can be really annoying, but in heavy rain, sleet, snow or obviously fog on a motorway, trust me, they are essensial. I drive in excess of 27k per year and wish in the low visability conditions that more people would use there rear fogs lights!

I do every time, BUT always turn them off when the weather improves, unlike some who leave them on and then annoy the crap out of everyone.

But like the guy said earlier in the post, it definatly helps keep the driver behind at bay in wet conditions. To behonest though, if your that worried, slow down, let them pass and continue YOUR journey safely and let them type of people get on with driving hazadously.

Ahhhhh feel so much better for getting that off my chest!!! ;-)

WTF!!!!

As LupoBabe said: It is ILLEGAL to use fog lights except under conditions of extremely limited visibilty.

I think I'll drive around blasting my horn and with my hazard lights on in future to attract attention. Why not?

lol.gif Why not indeed, well firstly because you would be breaking the law by sounding your horn 'breach of the peace' i think its called!? of which would also potentially give other drivers around you the impression there is something wrong, or that you have lost the plot! And yes hopfully would grab someones attention to report you for such intrusive actions. And as for the hazard lights, well that would make driving near you kinda difficult to see if you was going to turn into a side road etc with them on, so again causing an unessassary and very dangerous hazard.

I feel your point was flored from the first word to the last! slap.gif

Having your fog lights on may be a minor offence, but driving around sounding your horn and with yur hazard lights on would definalty cause an accident sooner or later. I fail to see how you can compare that to driving with fog lights on in light conditions where dazzling would be to a mimimum. the_finger.gif

Why do you want to make the car 'stand out'?

Much better to put main beam headlights and no fog lights = better visibility for you + no blinding other cars !

Apart from blinding other drivers...........and making the driver of the car look like a fekr.gif

Surely you can appreciate that fog lights are high intensity lights pointing horizontal to the ground and designed for severly reduced visibility. Without any thick fog to get through they are too bright for other drivers.

Properly adjusted, main beam lights point slightly downwards and therefore don't dazzle.

Sorry if you can't understand the (Sensible) rules relating to fog lights - rest assured if I come across you with your fog lights on (when they are not needed) you will get a dose of my foglights and bi-Xenon main beams to 'persuade' you into turing those fogs off.

And that from a BMW driver, who are notorious for having fogs on unnecessarily............

Ok, so here we go again!! lol.gif

Right, firstly, unless your Xenons are made of some unknown high density beam, they really arnt that great at dazzling people, the last few cars i have owned have had them on, and they just look great when on, so guess that why most people who have them on there car do so so often during the day! Why? Because they have them so want t use them!

Anyway, back to your points..ahem (just clearing my throat!!

Ok, you speak of sensible rules, like i have said, i agree that they are unessassery during the day and have no effect in anyway including dazzling other people! But isnt this like doing 31mph in a 30pmh zone and saying to people such as yourself that its breaking the law. I bet you'd be pis-sed off if you got nicked for doing 1mph over the speed limit!!? Or like the lady who this week got fined £60 for eating an apple whilst driving her car?!? Ooohhh really worth the £10k the police spent on convicting her????? What!? My point to all this wittering is that although we all know the law, and at times we ALL break it, there are always going to be some people that will get on there stool, chair, ladder and shout off about al the wrongs in the world and how people should be prosecuted for minor offences.

In the real world, it a real good job that the law can bend, and doesnt slam ALL of us that every time we drive over the speed limit, no matter how minor or may drive into the orange box at a junction like i see so often when they shouldnt be there, or maybe just park ilegally for just 5mins as they pop into a shop etc to get a paper.

At the end of the day, let people take the risks they deem reasonable to themselves, let the law look after itself and intervine when nessassery, and until then, spend the public money more wisely by catching the real criminals who steel our cars, break into our homes and assault, mame and kill fellow human beings!

So, i think, in my humble opinion, that driving with fog lights on is the least of most peoples lifes, and if they want to, then fine, just as long as they realise that if caught, they will possibly pay a fine for that luxury.

As for being a BMW driver, well, enough said slap.gif

Yep - flash your fogs at chavs coming the other way (with theirs on). I personally don't think they're all that helpful in fog either.

Maybe shouold be called CHAV or FASHION lights

[/ QUOTE ] renaming them chav lights is a good idea, give the offenders the finger to let them know they're a bit up themselves, like most(trying not to stereotype) BMW drivers, purely based on most of their driving style. sorry if i offended everyone in this chat room! hope not everyone drives a beemer!! cool.gif

I have to say I've never been dazzled by someone else's foglights. How many people here seriously have been, and I don't mean "annoyed to see them", I mean actually dazzled ?

What I used to be both dazzled and annoyed by were xenons. Until, er, I got some.
