M6

I just don't get this.

I drove a C2S as I've said before and whilst it's a superb drivers car it still left me feeling wanting. The M6 isn't in the same category anyway as it is very much the definitive Grand Tourer/Sports in every respect. It'll cope with the twisty bits but will also eat up ground like there is no tomorrow.

In terms of outright performance they're poles apart too.

I'd take the M6 every time. Each to their own though and I respect the opinions of those that choose the more 'country lane' sporting ethos of the 997.

There is another factor though too - they 911 is way too common, looks too much like a Boxster these days (not that there is anything wrong with the Boxster, but I think the designs have got a bit too alike) and even though the M6 is expensive....you get everything on it. The 997 options list is utterly ludicrous. I managed to spec one to £72k without even putting on things I'd 'like' but not necessarily 'want'.

For specced M6 money you could also look at AMV8 and SL55 AMG, then it makes it interesting.

I'd give the AMV8 a whirl... ZZZ.gifECLIPSe.gif

Hmm, I thought this. I used to think this, anyway.

However, I discovered all is not as it appears with the AM V8 when I looked into it in a bit more detail.

Firstly, have a look at the brochure online HERE.

Lovely isn't it? However, it starts at £80k before you even think about getting it anywhere near the specification of an M6. See, a fully loaded (every option on the basic list of options) M6 will set you back £87k - and you'll be able to get discount on it too because there are very strong rumours of BMW taking discounts off the car - up to £10k.

Now then....start speccing the AMV8 and boy do you get a shock...you're nudging £95k-100k before you have time to sniff and say 'Ooops, sorry, I meant vintage, not vantage'.

That said, I wouldn't buy an M6 new. I'd want 18 months or so and see what happens to residuals. If a year to 18 month old M6 gets to around £58-65k then I'd seriously think about it.

Then, compare the M6 performance to the AMV8 and the SL55 - it decimates them both. In fact it decimates most cars.

I'd also add that I think the SL55 is looking very dated now and I've never been a big fan of it anyway.

The only car that seriously starts to look attractive (to me) when you get to the £87k area is a second hand Lamborghini Gallardo. I haven't driven one though, and I'm not so keen on its looks when I compare it to 'proper' Lamborghini's (pre-Audi).

Anyway, it'll be a good while before I can dream of such wheels in my garage, so I'll make do in the meantime.

Thought or a Gallardo too, but ommitted it because it wouldn't be new and wasn't a fair comparison. See what you mean about the AMV8 though, pity!

I did however forget to add the CLS55 AMG... now I'm not normally not a Mercedes man but it definetley would change my mind about them. There's one cruising around Jesmond and it does look nice but the wife says it looks too 'chubby'?? smashfreakB.gif

I don't think it's entirely fair to compare an M6 with a standard 997. As MrMe says, you'd struggle to push the price of a 997 Carrera beyond £72k with options and that's still 8k below basic list for the M6.

And the M6 has four proper seats and is in a different league in terms of outright performance.

A specced up 997 Carrera 4S is a closer comparison, but even then it depends what you want from the car. The 911 will never be as complete a GT as the 6 series, in terms of accommodation and luggage space if nothing else.

If I had that kind of money to burn (one day...) and I wanted a superb performance car to use everyday with space for family/friends/luggage on the occasion that's required, then the M6 would be very difficult to overlook.

If I wanted a focussed performance car for me (!) and I already had some practical transport, I'd be looking at the 911 and a few similar alternatives.

Here's a thing too. Not terribly meaningful, but anyway... Even though the M6 has masses more power, I bet a 997 C2S/C4S with sports pack (suspension, exhaust etc) would beat it around just about any track.

From my own point of view, I've always liked big cars and I think I'd be more likely to go for a large performance saloon than the M6 if I was looking for an only car. And I know I'd regret it every time I had to take it back to the dealer for yet another warranty job, but I really fancy a Maser Quattroporte.

Hmm, well I have to admit....it doesn't.

The leg room in the back of a 6-series is worse than in an M3. It's appalling. For an adult to sit in the back with any comfort whatsoever I have to bring my seat all the way forward.

It's very very cramped indeed and I do believe it's got the same legroom as a 911 actually....(yes it's that bad).

Here is a proper GT! 169144-ok.gif You could pick up a nice one for 75K and it would certainly turn more heads than an M6, might have slightly higher running costs though!!

I agree completely - but the news is even better because you can pick them up (nice ones) for a lot less than £75k now. £50-60k gets you a very nice car indeed.

I know, I looked.....for all of about 5 seconds when I then discovered the running costs!

Well there was I with a little time on my hands today....thought I should pop into the local BMW dealership. Spotted a rather nice looking 6 series hidden amongst the pre delivery 3 and 5 series. To my surprise it was a carbon black brand spanking new M6, a cancelled order I was told! The prospective owner also ordered a DB9 at the same time and dipped out of the M6 deal.....I had a good look around it and had all opening parts function tested before I settled into the gorgeous drivers seat. 169144-ok.gif This is some feckin car boys and girls and the carbon fibre roof is something else!!! Nice saleperson told me it's available too which is a big surprise considering the alleged waiting lists...per chance to dream wink.gif

Ah. That buggers that theory up then. Though the number of times I have anyone in my back seat (stop sniggering at the back there... znaika.gif ) I don't suppose it'd matter.

Oh that does surprise me Chris, the car is a real beauty, I'll wager you have had a good look at an M6 have you? 169144-ok.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Honestly, no, not really. Purely because I daren't. I know what I'll think and I love the 645 so much I have promised to wait 18-24 months.

I'm also very wary of residuals on the M6 initially anyway. I strongly believe they're going to take a big hit to begin with, and I don't have that sort of cash to give away!

I totally agree MrMe, i have never been keen on jumping in to get one of the first cars, i like to let them sort the teething problems, and see what happens to residuals! I got £2000 off my 330ci during summer, and discounts were almost unheard of even then! Take the SL55 for example, didnt Clarkson pay over £100k for this awful Tellur silver one, which i agree, looks nothing special, and now i have seen ones of a similar vintage for about £60k! Not a bad buy at that price, but i'd rather an M6!

Ahhhh...I looked....and decided not.

Too many worries in the back of the mind, clutch issues and reliability in general is still proving a problem for the 4200GT.

Lovely car though, fantastic sound and the residuals have strengthened this year too.

You are a hard man to please!! Admittedly all the examples I am coming up with will not have the Reliability of the 6. But there is a trade off between exotica and cost of ownership. How about this one then??
