Stone chips?

What sort of cost are we looking at to have Armourfend "done" to your car, then John ?

Do they coat the whole of the front end (ie all the bonnet, bumpers and front wheel arches), or just parts of it ?

Does it look as shiny (after Meguiars) as one without treatment ?

Enquiring minds need to know smile.gif

I have the full TT kit except the front bonnet edge (I felt it was too obvious).

It's certainly working well and I'm really happy with it although I have recently heard of one issue where during removal there was a problem (possibly caused by the paint). I'm waiting to hear the final details before I continue (or stop) recommending them.

So Danksy, when you say "you pulled it off" - that seems to imply some kind of plastic laminate coating. Is it easy to get off ? If so, what stops it lifting during cleaning/polishing etc ?

I guess I wondering whether £400-£600 is worth it when I don't do very high mileage (perhaps only 1500 motorway miles a year).

It would definitely be cheaper just to get the stone chips touched up by "Chips Away" or somesuch for me, I suspect.

OK guys, the consensus on prevention seems to point toward Armourfend, but what do you do when you HAVE stone chips on your car? I've the friggin Grand Canyon dug into my hood from some Bastard in a Semi who couldn't keep his slow ass in the right lane. It's a good 1 1/2 inches long, and through the paint. Now that winters coming up, I'm worried that it could start to rust frown.gif I've tried that "Colored" wax crap, and it didn't work at all. I've thought of touch-up paint, but I tried that with my Polo and it looks like crap. Any ideas that DOESN'T invlove a new hood or repainting?

Thx,

I used the coloured 'wax crap' and it has actually worked really well on my black S3. I don't normally use Turtle Wax, I'm a Meguiars man! But just for the point of hiding stone chips I do. First use the 'lipstick' thing and go over each stone chip... can take a while. THen polish over the top with either turtle wax (which I use first) then Meguiars. Mine are all hidden now smirk.gif

Did this work on deep scratches as well? My brother-in-law has a digi-cam, so as soon as we get the image thing fixed, I'll take a pic and post it. It's really quite ugly frown.gif In an effort to describe this chip/scratch, it's on my hood, about 1 1/2 inches long, and deep enough that you can see whiteish metal through it. I caught a friggin BOULDER kicked up off a heavy trucks tires, while I was doin' probably close to 180 kph, if not 200. I've tried the colored wax, but not the ones with the lil "crayon" thingie. When I get a new front end (Hopefully Carstens RS4 front cool.gif) I figured I'd get some of the clear film for that, but my hood's still in a state frown.gif

one and half inches long is a pretty frickin big chip grin.gifblush.gif I put a deepish graze of similar size on my rear bumper (don't ask frown.gif) I used the lipstick thingy (darling wink.gif) and it doesn't fix the problem, but it does help.

I do use the lipstick for all of my chips and for the small chips, it works really well. For bigger ones however you can tell that there is something there, its just a bit more hidden and not that obvious. When I look at the scratch on my bumper (that I have covered up) it looks matt instead of the glossy shine of the paint. Better than it was though.

The lipstick thing is cheap as chips (excuse the pun grin.gif) so you should just give it a go anyway.

Cheers

Probably not much use to you Drill but I got a touch-up kit from halfords which was about a tenner and comes with everything needed. The touch-up pens, as well as having the usual brush affair like the genuine touch-up kit, have small metal "nibs" like Tippex pens - you just squeeze the tube and a small drop of paint comes out. A doddle to use when filling bigger chips.

Not often I recommend halfords.

ah bollocks.

armourfend wouldnt protect your ROOF!

just had a UFO hit and bounce off my roof, making 2 small gouges in paint and a rasonable size chip

wish it had hit windscreen.

have put a waterproof wax over it to stop the weather and rust...

chips away? or a DIY with Porsche touchup and a cotton bud?

its quite deep, but no dent....

Try this for any of your small touch ups guys - you know the ones where you end up with too much paint in a small chip. Put your touch up pen into a cup of hot tap water, (loosen the lid first dont want exploding paint pens) leave for a minute or two give a shake and hey presto nice thin paint, not the usual dollop!! Take your time and do the same with the laquer and you can hardly tell that they were there.

Regarding what products are available, does 3M market their "Invisible Bra" product in the UK? It goes on with a 50-50 mixture of alcohol and water, and peals-off easily if an edge is lifting, if it becomes torn by an automatic car wash, or otherwise.

There is a company that markets the same thing as "INVINCA-SHIELD"

http://www.invinca-shield.com/

There is a vendor here in Minneapolis that is mobile and gives a 2 year warranty including labor. I'd look for someone with a similar offer in your area.

I have a Silver S4 and I'm extremely happy with it. It's not completely invisible, but very close, and when I had a piece that had been lifted on the edge (most likely due to having installed it when it was too cold the first time), it was fixed for free. grin.gif
