Ian_C
[ QUOTE ] Ian tell us the truth - you've experineced both - is the 2.0TDi any more refined than the 320d? [/ QUOTE ] Sorry for the very belated reply - catching up on old posts! Yes the 2002 MY facelift E46 320d SE is a cracker. The gears are fairly wide on the five speed manual, and I can see why BMW made a 6 speed box standard for the 320d for the 2003 MY. Whilst it is very noisy standing beside an idling car, inside things are quieter, which is amazing considering the engine is right under the windscreen as mentioned above! The 2.0 PD 140 is really good on the move. I first sampled it March 2005 in Tobys' then brand-new A3 Sportback and was most impressed by the overall package. The Pump Duse plants sound just as rough as the BMW though! Despite the 2.0 PD 170 approaching, I believe VAG have already admitted defeat and on single injectors and are evaluating a change to common rail for future vehicles. Should also give more flexibility below 1500rpm, an area common rail has pump duse licked. From a driving point of view, putting 250 lb ft through the front wheels only would do my nut in. Tobys PD 140 slips all over the place even on its monster Sport alloys and P Zeros. In an age where Audi just won't match quattro to their diesel plants, the E46 320d has the Audi destroyed with regards to actually putting down the monster torque. [/ QUOTE ] I don't understand this one Ian.. Audi are doing quattro diesels.. I saw an A3 2.0TDi quattro only this morning I'm no expert, but IIRC it took Audi a while to develop the drivetrains for each model last time around, so a diesel quattro won't be far away for the B7 A4 if the new A3 has it. [/ QUOTE ] Audi still don't sell the A3 and A3 Sportback PD 140 quattro Haldex in all trim levels with all three gearboxes. Toby waited and waited following the Sportbacks' Sept 2004 UK launch for Audi to launch a manual quattro in sport trim, but there was no news, hence they ordered. Could not wait forever. The very week it was delivered - first week of March 2005, now one year ago - Audi broke news of the Sportback S line (which seems to add very little for the huge premium) and Haldex. Doh! The B7 chassis is identical to the B6 as you are fully aware Ben, hence development time is not an issue. The drivetrain is the same. I guess, as mentioned previously, the demand a more expensive - but less economical - 2.0 PD 140 quattro was not great enough to warranty it being launched. Personally I would not buy an Audi PD 140 without quattro, such is the performance. The economy is good enough to start with to comprehend the 5 mpg [or so] loss. damianmkv
Update I sent numerous e-mails to this particular dealership in Surrey trying to see what was happening re the test drive I had booked for 4th March at 9.30am. The saleslady had told me that she would contact me on 1st March to confirm the tests. And...nothing back from her... So i sent another e-mail saying " is this happening or not?" and then on Friday 3rd at 6.05pm I got an e-mail from her saying " I left a message re the test drive on your wife's mobile. How about 3.30pm tomorrow ? " What a bare-faced lie !!!! I only gave my mobile number out ! Audi do not have my wife's mobile number ! And we specifically said am test drive only. OK, so I could have 'phoned but why should I chase Audi to give them my business ? Bye bye, Audi - you have just crossed yourself off the list

Of course there's more than one Audi dealer in Surrey. BUB

damianmkv
maybe true - she was very keen initially but it went downhill from there. I get excellent service from BMW...but maybe thats coz I've been using the same dealer for 8 years
Ian_C
So why not play BMW off Audi, get them to match the £1600 better Audi part-ex and order an E90 330d M Sport.... Ian

damianmkv
Finally...managed to get a test drive out of Audi ..2 months later.I found out that the salesman that sold me my Golf now works for Audi so I spoke to him Test drive a 2.0T s-line Avant last saturday..a bit tramliney, steering is very light ( almost too light )and doesn't feel quick. Have asked them to try & sort me out a good price....
DanG
The new 2.0T engine has a far more linear power delivery than the old 1.8T in my mind. So it might not feel quick, but it is fairly nippy. The 1.8T used to surge more on turbo boost, so felt more powerful! Loved it!

It just takes a little bit of time, phoning round and visiting dealers.
the911sc
I got 10 % which is pretty much top level discount so milo did extremely well (and not 'well over 10% from my recolection!!!). I did see my dealer invoice for my car which is the cost to the dealer and with 10% discount the dealer made about 500 quid which is not what they want really!... Can recommend the special edition though.. its great...
