flnutt
I also went into dealers last week and he mentioned an R34, due feb with around 300bhp, apparently official from VW.
evergoodstudios
When my car was in at dealers a few months ago they said that the R36 was going to be the new Passat. Makes sense, like a VW RS4 in a way. Don't know if this has been mentioned before...

rs32
has any manufacturer ever launched two completely different-sized cars with the same badge ? struggling to think of an example.
Oli
Know what you mean, but it'll be the Golf R36 and Passat R36 surely, just like the Sierra COSWORTH and the Escort COSWORTH, or the 205 GTI and the 309 GTI etc etc.
rs32
so there are some examples - cheers for the reminder who knows what they'll do - but I'd question whether 280 bhp is enough for the Golf that people are really keen to see. Unless it also loses a serious amount of weight. [/discussion about a non-existent car rumbles on]

Oli
I would like to hop on at least 300 bhp, as in the Passat its going to be 280, so you'd think they'd up it from that
rs32
my only excuse is that I hadn't had a drink when I posted the above although the "36" bit is a bit more specific than just "GTI" or "Cosworth" - but still no excuse for being stupid blame Dan32 and Jimmy_P for destroying all my brain cells on Saturday night

Woppum
Ive got to say adding more weight over the front wheels, really doesn't excite me. Even that fact about the RS4 turns me off. I love fast hatchbacks but I can imagine this car balancing on its front bumper unless there are two people in the back weighting it down... Oli
Isnt the R36 engine just a remade R32 engine, so in theory no more weight, just more fun
Woppum
Even if there is no more weight, its a larger bore engine which means more of the weight is positioned in front of the front axle. The fact of the matter is, the R32 has a too big, too heavy engine. Thats why alot of the journalists prefer the Gti. However its alot of fun. I just wish VW could find a way of putting more weight further back. I loved my R, but its tendency to under steer so early was really made obvious when I got a well balanced car. It may only have rear wheel drive but in the dry at least, you can take corners so much faster, with no roll or tyre squealing...
RossG
I found out last week that the doubters amoungst you may well have egg on your faces... Didn't mention it, as some of you will never ever believe it. Let's hope the TSN 'humour' is alive and well when the cars are sold and driving around the place The Golf R36 will happen. Just like some of us have said for a long long time.
Woppum
Im not saying it wont. Im just saying that sticking a massive engine anywhere it will easily fit doesnt make a great car...
RossG
I'm just playing. I know your not saying it won't... Dosen't mean others aren't absolutely convinced though Oh, and while we are talking about massive engines, how's the understeer on that Bentley
Woppum
That was never meant to be anywhere near as fun as the R32. The Bentley may be fairly quick, but fun, balanced and speedy where it counts... its not...

sheppane7
why should a 3.6 litre engine be any heavier than a 3.2, if it is using the same block arcitecture?. come on whopps... please catch up..... when you start making senxe on a consistant basis, perhaps we will listen.... That CSL you have is a paragon of road manners.. or was the trip into the hedge down to something else? nothing like stimulating a debate, eh?
