chipandpin
Just had a run in on the motorway with an old cossie - wasnt sure at first whether it was a kitted up saphire or a cossie, but bloody hell - it was a cossie!!! I must say that there were absolutely no cars on the motorway, visibility was good and roads were dry, before i say i was 145+ before i caught him up - straight line accelaration and it left me - id guess at <5 seconds 0-60 vs my 6.0ish with DSG in sports mode. Would that have been a std cossie or tuned? it has a sticker on the back saying "scooby slayer" and i dont think he was egsagerating! Also got me thinking, how would the R compare with some of the all time classic 'affordable' sports cars and hot hatches such as Renault5 GT Turbo, Escort Cossie, Delta Integrale, etc? Ritey
Cossie's can be upped to the 550 mark without breaking to much of a sweat. There is an old boy who has one and races it in hillclimbs I attend with the minis that pushes near on 600 bhp depending on boost. Was it this shape:
chipandpin
yes but without the big spoiler - oh and it was white, which everyone knows is faster than black
dogbucket
I have failed to shake off both a modded Renault 5 Turbo and what looked like a standard Escort Cosworth. Difficult to say how hard they were trying to keep up, but I could not pull away. Trouble is I think most of those sort of cars left on the roads are now modded to some degree. I was even beaten by a chaved up old Astra, which was very annoying until I heard his wastegate chirping as he flew past. It really doesnt help me to stop wanting a Scooby/Evo/Skyline or similar.. ChrisBuer
With my new mods I didn't have any problems keeping tabs with a modded Rennie 5 on the way back from APS I love my R now
billy2shots
5 GT Turbo's were/are great cars, but it comes to something when a R32 needs to be modded to keep up with one. I know power to weight etc etc but hay i just wonder how quick the R32 realy is.
rs32
on anything other than 0-60 I'd say a remapped/milltek'd MkV .:R is about the same as an Impreza WRX PPP. This comparison is based on 10k miles done in each car in the last 18 months. It's difficult to judge exactly due to the N/A vs turbo sensations being so different. And I know that a MkIV .:R with Revo stage 2 is (just) slightly quicker in a straight line than a remapped/milltek'd MkV
billy2shots
So a Modified 5 GT turbo as about the same as an Impreza PPP. Just cant see it.
shark_90
That 5GTT must have been pretty well modified also - I can remember one completely failing to shake me off in my A4 1.9TDi +remap.. And then I left him when we got to about 115 as he just ran out of puff, or gears, not such which.
AGK512
I used to have one. They only weighed 850kg and had 120bhp now a DSG R weighs 1600 and something kg so the are pretty close even in standard trim .... in the dry
activa
[ QUOTE ] So a Modified 5 GT turbo as about the same as an Impreza PPP. Just cant see it. [/ QUOTE ] There are modded 5 turbos out there that will kill a PPP Impreza. There are also modded Cossies out there that will the same Renault 5 that dusted the Subaru! Then when you get to the Skylines it just becomes a different league altogether where Macca F1's will be seen off with ease. With turbo cars, the only limits to modification is how much money the owners are prepared to spend.
w1how
Slightly off topic but a while back I had a modded rs turbo race me on my ducati 749.I was very supprised that he wasnt too far behind up to 130mph and back down again(on a private road of course officer),however when he stopped there was steam pouring from his bonnet and a flood of liquid(dont know if it was water or oil)pouring from his engine.I guess you can mod these cars but reliability suffers.Ive had a tatty cosworth keep up with me on the straights in my carrera 2s(couldnt keep up braking and round corners),and also an old golf keep up with me in the R32 so I guess these old cars can be modified to quite an extent. billy2shots
And depends how mad or how hard someone is prepared to push their car.
chipandpin
So the conclusion is - dont attempt to race old hot hatches in a standard R32 unless you know exactly what is under the bonnet or you may end up with egg on your face! Ritey
Add certain minis to the list too, unless your on a motorway, then your safe
Soulboy
I had an old VR6 follow me the other week and he was keeping right on my tail. I waited till we got to a quite steep hill - slowed down slipped DSG into S and floored it. After a slight delay - he was right there on my tail again. Now I used to have one of those and it was crap - so it must have been well modded.

[/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] yes but without the big spoiler [/ QUOTE ] Confoooosed. As far as I know the 3 door original Sierra Cosworth didn't come with a whaletail delete option. The Escort Cosworth did. The 'Sapphire' was the 4 door saloon version available in both 2wd and 4wd.
Mollox
Many years ago an older friend had a 5 GT Turbo with c.180 bhp and that was plain scary. As has been noted, at 850 odd kg it makes a compelling rocket sled. Hasta la vista R32 I'm afraid
geemanr32
Seems as though we are not able to get away from a S3 as well. Dont understand why not assuming it is standard ? Also EVO tested the R32 Manual and got 5.8 0-60 and 15.2 to 0-100. I also got EVO verify this and they said yeah thats what we got. I reckon the car they had probably was well run in with over 10,000 miles on the clock. Pity really because I do less than 10,000 miles a year so I wont see full performance till late next year Unless the upgrade bug gets me
ChrisBuer
That S3 is modded though. The comments say: "stage 3 but with about 380nm torque." So I'd expect it to pull away
geemanr32
OK thanks for the update makes sense now because I expected the R32 to leave the S3 once the speeds approached 100MPH. That said the R32 still put up a very good fight considering how much the S3 has been modified.
