Wallachie
[ QUOTE ] Oh dear, not looking good for the new S3. And this guy actually liked the styling aswell. [/ QUOTE ] Bear in mind though that the current S3 doesn't exactly sound very good, and I would bet money that the new one will sound better than that. The new Golf GTI sounds pretty good IMO, and it can't bet that far off it!
AZURES3
"the engine reminded me rather more of the old-school turbos I used to drive around in the late 80s. Below 2500rpm there's precious little urge available, and when it does arrive it comes in a big whooshing rush" Game on AZ

sitas3
that's kind of what my old RS4 was like. Gutless below 2k then 'wallop' she's in!

S3ENVY
I'm gonna hold back my opinions on the car until someone I respect reviews it.... ....or I get a test drive. Can't be any worse than my S3 and I still love that......when it's working.
Srcoates
I think it is fairly obvious that there is either going to be an upgrade soon (A La 210 to 225) but that is unlikely... Or an RS3 complete with DSG and 3.2 etc. will arrive on the scene. Only after the RS3 has had it's moment of glory will the DSG be offered on the S3. What do you reckon?!! My lunch money is on the RS3... Bring it on I say!
sitas3
I reckon you could well be right on the RS3. The new S3 leaves the road clear for it doesn't it - I never used to think one would ever appear until I saw the looks of the new S3 (apart from the front!). Dave
I agree with the guy in the article.. 265bhp from a 4 pot is really pushing the boundaries. I cannot understand why audi didn't go for a 6 pot. They reckon it's due to weight, but by the time you add the battery and other gubbins i don't reckon there is much in it. david_d
I don't see RS3 happening with the 8P at all, didn't say say RS badge was reserved for cars other than the A3? If the S3 is 32k specced, that means an RS3 is likely to be 40K. I just don't see it. How many people would be willing to spend that much on a 3 door hatch? and there lies the problem IMO
DuncS3
What if its a sportback?
Mollox
Not really sure if it is pushing the boundaries, Dave. Honda (and Renault) manage just 25% less without a turbo!
sitas3
I suspect it will still sell reasonably well - Interesing - when some people spend that much wonga, are they really going to say its a crap car?? especially after waiting so long. S3Rob
I don't think it's all that bad to be honest. Both articles said it handled well and that it was genuinely rapid with a punchy engine. Autocar said it was the current boss of the niche. I'm really looking forward to seeing what this engine is really like. I can't imagine Audi have made it unrefined, maybe just more audible and obviously that bigger turbo whistle will be ever present on boost. The guy that said the engine isn't worth listening too. Show me a 4 pot that is? From the factory, not with Milteks etc. I won't blindly defend it. It's dissapointing that the steering is apparently a bit vague and I do hope they haven't gone over the top with the stiffness and damping. "Not as good as the R32". Yeah right. Power, handling, interior, exterior, exclusivity, kudos all to the S3.

banwelll
Hmm more fuel for the fire.. Looks like we're going to be inundated with silly reviews over the coming months. What I can't understand - as past s3 owner, and current 3.2 v6 A3 with DSG is what all this engine note rubbish is about. Admitted I am not running Milltek exhaust (apparently they're pants with DSG anyway) but you can hardly hear the engine. An it still sounds like a bag of nails on start up - just like the old S3. Go listen at evo.co.uk to ferraris if you want that sort of thing. I actually think I preferred the engine scream from a chipped s3. Maybe I am wrong. What the new S3 seems to represent is an amalgamation of all the things us enthusiast have done to our cars - its the same (okay tweaked & strengthened) engine but chipped, better cooling and air intake (FMICs), lowered, uprated brakes (17 inch system). painted callipers (who hasn't done that?, short shifter and slammed into the much improved Mk2 A3 chasis. I am thinking it's going to be a stormer! Especially as you just know it can be further chipped towards the magical 300 mark...

[/ QUOTE ] The problem with the Japanese engines they give you nothing low down, thats fine if you are in maximum attack mode but a real bind when you are just pressing on in normal traffic. As for the noise. I have the standard 2.0T and whilst its not a 6 cylinder in the aural stakes, the exhaust / induction noise on the sportback is about the best I've heard a 4 cylinder make in a standard production car. I've read that it sounds like a diesel in the A4 in 220bhp guise but mine has none of these traits at all.
