Merlot
I'm pretty sick of the front shoulder wear on S4's with the standard Contis SC2's and wondered what else they came from the factory with? I seem to remember seeing Michelin PS2's which I believe are known for their long life. Am I right for thinking PS2's are also OEM and are there other tyres too? I'm not wanting to start another 'which tyres are best' thread but wondered what range of tyres S4's came from the factory with. Thanks.
Nelson_R32
I just had my PS2's changed at 20000 miles, so I can vouch for the lasting a long time. They would've gone longer had I not been to the 'Ring and a Car Limits Airfield day The downside? They are EXPENSIVE! I've just shelled out £352.50 for two new front tyres and thats at a discounted rate, apparently!
Nelson_R32
Oh, and the tyres Audi's are fitted with depends on the Best Deal Audi can wring out of the different tyre manfacturers 06 MY's were usually fitted with Michelins or Dunlops but the Michelins have now been replaced with Continentals for 07 MY's. Merlot
Interesting, I've had/have three S4's - 03, 04 & 05 (all B6's) and all have Contis. Which Dunlop tyre was it and is that the only three types used? PS Thanks for the tip on the PS2's - they cost 10% more but seem to last far longer and hopefully don't have the thrum on certain surfaces that the Contis do. P_G
It seems such a pity that for a performnace model like the S4, OEM tyre choice is down to price. What a compromise. The conti's are terrible as I remember, both for grip and wear. You would have thought Audi would get a good deal out of Goodyear if they shod all S3's and S4' in F1's. I notice RS4's get Pirelli and they ain't cheap tyres, so only top top end of range cars get a tyre that suits? Personally if it were on the options list as 'choice of tyres', albeit for an extra £50 or so IMO it would be a good idea again albeit that only a handful of people would really care. Daz
RS4's get Conti's and Michelins too. The Conti SC3's are apparently a better tyre than the 2's
P_G
I thought your RS4 cab had Pirelli's on Daz?
Daz
It does but I've seen other RS's with Conti's and Michelins.
P_G
Did you ask for them or were they on the car when you got it as standard? Just curious as I've never seen any new Audi with Pirelli's previously excepts yours and the three RS4's my local stealer has for sale, one avant and two cabs. Daz
Nope they came as standard. Infact to get replacements the Pirelli's work out cheaper than the Conti's or Michelin's.
P_G
Same with F1's they are generally cheaper tyres than Michelins of Conti's but not used as OEM. Goodyear obviously don't need to discount.
gizze
I would go with Pirelli P Zero Rossos, and it has to be rossos, or the PS2's, both great tyres. I hate the Contis with a passion, terrible tyres. One that is getting a great write up is the new Falken 452, excellent prices on them too. [/ QUOTE ] On previous cars I have been very impressed with the Rossos and PS2's so I will go that way next time (I've got two S4's to retyre soon unfortunately - my Cab is for sale now if anyone asks but realistically it will go next May for a TTR and the tyres will not make it that far so I'm as well having new ones for the winter, trouble is the spare (Conti) is unused). Merlot
Anyone seen Pirellis on an S4 as factory fit?
Precab
Not sure this helps Merlot, but my 05 A4 1.8T S-Line Cab came with Pirelli P Zero Rossi's. I was well chuffed , but I presume its just luck of the draw!
Merlot
Thanks - can't decide between Rossos and PS2s as I've had both before on other cars. I would expect the Pirellis to be cheaper.
gizze
I would check out http://www.kwik-fit.com as they have a buy 3 and get the fourth free offer all the time on different brands, this month it is Michelin so you can get 4 for around £550 fitted. Also check other sizes out, for instance if you go with 245/35/18 compared with 235/35/18 they can sometimes be £20 a tyre cheaper.
Will22
My S4 cab had Conti's from the factory, the RS4 and the S8 have Michelins but I did ask at the time of ordering
Scotty
I killed the Conti's on an evening track session. They just couldn't hack it. I had Michelin PS2s which were really good but I just prefer the F1's over them.
P_G
Has anyone tried Vredesteins of Falkens on their cars, not necessarily on their S4? I hear good things about both, just wonder if they'll top F1's in wet and dry drip. The only downside with F1's is winter / snow grip is bad. Now I have my Avus wheels as a autumn / winter set I'm thinking of changing from F1's to something else that's more suited to that season's driving conditions. Any recommendations? gizze
I have heard very good reports on both, the Vredesteins seem to do very well in European tests, but so are the new Falken 252's. My favourites would have to be..... F1's Ps2's Pirelli rossos But I would try the Falkens, considering you can get 4 for £400 they have to be worth a bash surely!?
