Dave
I don't think there is anything special about the drives.. but i thought it was the fans that made the noise?
Snail
Its a combination of fans and drive. Id imagine the drive is able to be fitted at a later date, they certainly were on the original xbox.

timps
[ QUOTE ] Possible to retrofit do you think? [/ QUOTE ] 2 Problems exist at the moment these may or may not be overcome at a later date. 1) You cannot change drives without hacking the DVD drives firmware. They have an unique disc encryption key, you would need to copy this off your old drive and insert it onto the new one & as yet no hacked firmware for this new drive. 2) Microsoft started (May/begin of June 2006) logging the original stock factory drive/version somewhere on the 360. So you might run into E66 problems because the model of your drive would no longer match the model stored on your 360. If your console was made before this date you might be OK. Or alternativly you could try & send it off to Microsoft and pay them to do the upgrade. I doubt they would ever release it as a kit as it would give the hackers a wealth of knowledge.
