biturbo Posted March 23, 2007 Report Share Posted March 23, 2007 Rightio, just been checking out the threads on here regarding screens. Our 15(ish) year old Panny CRT has gone faulty. It's in for an estimate of repair, but I think it's had it's time and am looking around for a new one. The only thing that I have not come across yet is the Screensize v Roomsize debate. The room it will go in is about 12ft square and the viewing angle will need to be fairly wide from where the furniture is located. Nearest viewer will be about 6-8ft away. What is the protocol on screen size? Is there one when in a cinema a whole wall is covered at the front and you can't see the whole screen without moving your eyes/head and it is deemed good for viewing? Consider how many people will watch TV in the same room. If your a family then it's x 4+ people. Wherever the seating area for all four will be and where you intend to locate the TV are two primary factors. Add in natural light and electrical lighting and glare considerations next. Then it's a blend of size over position over ascetic's within the room. Even if a 50" screen is possible I'd still have to consider the overall balance of the room. Finger in the wind and without you posting a picture of the room or a paint drawn plan saved as a JPEG (hint) I'd say a 42" would suit better than a super sized. On a flat wall away from the glare of window light tends to be best. I've seen a few face height, corner alcove installs on the robot type cantilever brackets and they look too much like a TESCO's display 'area' for me. TV's large or small, shouldn't always be the centre piece of a room- That said the best option is to have a TV room and go for the largest beast you can afford. £1600 buys a 50" Nat Pan 600 series, that's sooo tempting. The sun is round that side of the building in the late evening and would shine through the window onto the wall on the left in the picture. Looking at Gaunty's link it says that to get the "recommended" 30 degree viewing angle the screen should be 51.6" The old unit was only a 28" and we are currently using a 14" portable I was thinking of the 42" Panny. Paul Posted March 23, 2007 Report Share Posted March 23, 2007 Ive got as similar sized room, and have a mock up of a 42" panny in cardboard. Its looks ok, but proof will be when i get the sofas in, and get a feel for it. looking at your plan, i would have been tempted to get the tv across the corner where your music centre is, and move the chair to where the telly is now. Might take some work with tv /sky cables etc but that would be the logical choice. opposite the sofa. [/ QUOTE ] I've got a 22' by 16' room (excluding bay!) and it's got a 28" wide CRT telly that's about 14 years old in it! I really should upgrade, but I was thinking LCD instead of plasma. I went to pic one up on Monday for the conseratory and was actually very disapointed, poor blacks, washed out colours and very soft. But my mates arrived yesterday and his was fantastic, in fact the best all in one flat panel I have ever seen. Very impressive. So make if you get a screen that you don't think looks quite right you send it straight back as there may be some bad apples out there. I am getting mixed reports on the PX700, there is an anti glare coating on the screen and a few people whos judgement I trust is saying the pic is not as good as the PX70, so unless you have a serious problem with light on the screen he PX70 maybe a better buy. At a grand it really has moved the flat panel game on a notch or two. LCD's don't come anywhere near this quality. And you can buy the 37" for £800 and the 42" for £900. I am a bit of an audio snob if I am going to be honest with myself, and even I was very impressed with this bit of kit, you can pick them up for around £350 if you don't mind last seasons model. gizze Posted March 28, 2007 Report Share Posted March 28, 2007 No, don't do it for a living, I was a Manager at Richer Sounds back in the day when they used to sell alright kit. But I have always been into hi-fi and home cinema stuff, probably the only thing I spent more money on than cars!! When I was buying my company shares last year I down sized my home cinema gear, was trying to find a fair bit of money and started to look at my kit, £10,000 amp, £4,000 video processor, £3,000 dvd player, £5,000 speakers and cables etc. So I sold loads of it, but out of all that I kept the Panasonic plasma, well went from a 50" to a 42" but kept the same model, and to be honest the picture isn't that different, they are such good screens, and this new one is awesome, first time the TV version is nearly as good as the monitor commercial version. I have managed to talk loads of people out of LCDs and they have all been over the moon with the Panny plasma, I have also had about 30 Pioneer users round now and they have all gone to Panasonic bar two, and only cause they can't afford to now they have bought the Pio.
