Im thinking of changing my M3 coupe for a M3 convertible.

Anyone done this, any issues with the convertible.

I assume the handling is not as good as with the coupe.

Also how easy is it to swop the hardtop with the soft top.Or

does the hardtop just go over the soft top.

It will be an SMG,how does this compare with the manual?

I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread. I'm getting an M3 soon. I want a convertible cos I'm a poser, and I want a manual cos I thought SMG was guff.

Perhap's I need to do some more research!!

Re. the convertible, I was quite impressed with it. Good with the roof up and obviously nice with it down.

Hard top is a two person job but very easy. Hard top goes on with soft top down.

Why you changing?

SMG is far better, but everything else from there is downhill imho.

I love the M3 coupe, I hate the M3 cab.

Make sure you take one out for a long test first.

Come on Guy it's (SMG) not better, just different!! The SMG v Manual debate is entirely down to personal taste and driving styles.

Of course, but surely everything we say on here is just our own personal opinion?? We shouldn't need to put "I think....." in front of every sentence or "....in my opinion" at the end??

i agree with gizze, SMG rocks, manual, well... i test drove a SMG E46, (unfortunatly after i bought my manual) and much preferred the SMG.

I too like the vert's.. but then i like coupe, cos i have had both, i think i would go for another convertible. I aint a petrol head that tracks car's

Well Ive driven the convertible with the sMG-couldnt get the roof down as it was spitting with rain.

I peronally didnt like the smg, also roof was creaky with the roof up.

So Im going for a manual again, just need to drive one with roof down now.

Every M3 convertible over 6 months old I have been in creaked loads.

You need the SMG for a good day to decide if you like it, I would have had the CSL in manual if there had been a choice, but after having the SMG for a couple of days I would never choose manual again given the choice.

Test drove an SMG this morning, a coupe. Quality! The salesman drove it first and when he planted the loud pedal, man that car moved. The car felt much quicker than the last one I drove - a manual convertible. I only drove the car for about 20 minutes but I liked it. It was jerky at times, which I didn't notice when he was driving (does it take getting used to?), but overall I liked it.

The point that the salesman made as we parted was that when he's put in a manual M3 he feels almost cheated. Where is all the modern technology that is put in to the SMG??!!

I'm open - I liked the SMG and would buy one, but I also still like the idea of the manual. I'm happy to have either which has widened my choice. Cool.

And he also said that the SMG changes gear in 0.7 seconds. Even the best of manual gear changes he said takes 1 second. Perhaps just salesman talk, but still. ECLIPSe.gif

The SMG has 6 settings, 1 is the slowest smoothest changes and 6 is the fastest most agressive changes, also you can only put it in S6 when you turn the traction of compltely.

What mode did you have it in?? I actually found S1 and S2 far too slow and jerky almost like all power cuts out during the change, which is probably what does happen, but it is not good.

For normal driving I used to use S4 most of the time, this seemed to change nice and quick without too much transmision slam so actually seemed to be the smoothest of settings to use. Also if you lift off very slightly as you change gear you can get it so it isn't even noticable as a passenger, this comes pretty quickly.

Then when you put it in S6, or even S5, it is awesome, lightning quick gear changes that you don't have to lift off for, they slam you in the back as you go through the gears and it just seems to suit the car perfectly.

S6 used to scare me shitless to be honest, if I had had the car over the summer I would have pobably used it more, but for every day keep the traction on.

Is S6 the extra one that lights up when you switch DSC off? I haven't tried it, or launch control yet..... crazy.gif
