Merlot
The real killer is the band G (old basis) cars registered from march 01 to march 06 who will seea big increase in VED. For eg, my 2003 registered S4 will see its car tax go from £210 to £440 in one go. Obviously I will be playing with dates and six month tax to minimise this but budget item A.99 implies that they will clampdown on people doing this ahead of 1st April 2009. scillyisles
Absolutely correct RR - a car produces much more pollution when it is being produced as opposed to the C02 output during its lifetime. So forcing people into buying smaller new cars actually increases overall pollution and is demonstrably bad for the environment. 20% of the UK's C02 output comes from road transport which includes cars, buses and lorries. I could not see a breakdown for how much of the 20% cars produce. The biggest C02 producer in the UK is the energy industry at 37%. Most sane people would concentrate on reducing emissions from the big ares first - erm not this government. Table 8 b on the new VED tables makes very interesting reading. It looks to me as if pre March 2001 cars are a good idea as the VED is only increasing from £185 per year to £200.
Merlot
Yes, I was wondering if I should be stupid and buy a 550 Maranello on an X plate or earlier and pay only £185/210 pa.
RedRobin
scillyisles - I'll be quoting that first statement to further spread the word. Ryan - Cheers for correcting me on the new car info re the GTI.
Merlot
Strangely, he has made the S5, for eg, more attractive viz a viz the 3.0tdi than it was and certainly more so then I expected. If anything he has put me more on getting a B8 S4 to replace my B6 S4 than getting a B8 3.0tdi. Strange.
Chris_B
[ QUOTE ] This worries me - "Funding set aside for road-pricing proposals" Hmmmm on top of Raod Tax and fuel duty FFS they will spend billions on this and f@ck it up. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, the extra tax they're going to charge us now will be ring-fenced for giving to the government's favoured consultancies to waste in trying to extract more money from us later. PeterS
The good news (for me) if I read the info correctly is that my 1988 BMW 325i Touring, which averages around 19 mpg according to the OBC, and has no CAT or any other significant emmissons control equipment will have a VED that rises from £185 to £200 Where's the sense in that
PeterS
And thinking about this a little more... Assume those in the 'gas guzzler' (horrible phrase IMO) category are unaffected, since the incremental cost is minimal - less than adding Sat Nav in most cases they'll raise more tax from this group. Those in the middle, family cars, autos etc, will feel the pain of the extra VED cost more, so will be more likely to trade down slightly to lower emissions cars. Net VED probably the same... But lower emissions cars are generally smaller/cheaper, so surely the VAT take from this group, one of the largest I'd have thought, will actually be less And of course the whole scheme will require even more people to administrate it, with the consequent salary and pension costs. My considered summary: It'll cost more to run, and raise less revenue What a bunch of absolute incompetents Peter

EssFour
I heard an interesting fact whilst listening to a money programme this morning on the radio. When they governemnet first announced this 2p/lzr increase oil was at $68/barrel. Now it is over $100/barrel. The analyst was saying due to rising oil prices and the extra revenue being generated by VAT that the government could actually afford to reduce the tax on petrol by 9p/ltr. Pitch fork anyone? patently
[ QUOTE ] But, i have just spoken to a guy who has confimed that our pm was so left wing in college he was nearly communist and was being monitored very closely by the police. He also said that he was batting for the other side. Dont know how that one has been brushed under the carpet! Funny how the token blonde wife and young kiddy have appeared now eh. Sorry for change in subject, but its in the detail. [/ QUOTE ] Poor girl ... she won't which way to turn (Although I'll believe that tale only when it's put on a rather better evidential basis...) theduisbergkid
I would be interested in peoples comments on the following : 1-Will this genuinely influence our car buying choice ? 2-The Government needs tax revenue to run the country, what do we object to most, the amount of tax we pay, or the way it is spent ? 3-I heard somewhere that the Government received 3 times the amount of tax it did 10 years ago (£600billion nor v £200 billion in '97), not sure if thats correct, but does anyone think a change of Government will mean genuine tax reductions ? My answers FWIW, 1-no, 2-the way they spend it, and 3-of course not.

steelwind101
1) Maybe. 2) The amount of tax we pay, or more, the lack of choice on where it goes. 3)A goverment run by myself with new rules would change this, how ever the current Conservative leadership is just another shade of same colour as this goverment. Sad very sad. Geoff
