Brabus
So I manged to hit an indicated 175mph before my limiter kicked in last night. Conditions were perfect. +1 c, late at night and a straight clear stretch of road (wont say where ) After not too much time had it up to nearly 7,000 revs and 175mph on the dash. So what does this mean? Are limiters on later M3's more liberal? Is my speedometer over-reading? Have to say I was still abit shaky 30 mins later, such was the adrenaline rush. Sven
I think speedo's are pretty accurate nowadays, esp. in the type of cars we drive, give or take 5kmh, but that'll be it I guess. Limiters are mysterious things. Couldn't find mine anywhere either...

Brabus
Yep, hit 155 (or might have just been below as I didnt want to grenade the engine) in 5th and then changed up to 6th, was thinking about that to see if I would bypass the limiter so to speak. Pity I didnt have time to enjoy it as I was concentrating keeping the car on the road
shao_khan
Scarey isnt it. I would loev to know how these limiters work - I seem to recal a lot of the UK press commenting on the M3 limiter and how it didnt seem to work 'correctly'
Dave
The germans are all in a race to produce the fastest car... Imagine a race between an M3 and RS4 and your car (being one of the manufactures car) stopped at 155.. you would feel a right plonker.. hence the 'variation'. The limiter is only there to be politically correct.. and I think soon they will be a thing of the past. Most people can bypass them via software now anyway. Lagoo
Its is purely to keep these EUROcrats happy and off their backs!!! I remember them saying that they were going to ban all bikes with more that 130BHP a couple of years ago

Sven
I think you're spot on there Dave! Fortunately 'PC' and Greenpee are going out of style (wonder how long Shell needs to figure that one out though). MB already left the limiter out on the new SL65 IIRC. Good for Porsche btw for never installing them!

Woppum
Sven you say the SL65 wont be restricted....ooo, be that does about 210+ then if the 55 supposedly does 208!!! In regards to GPS compared to speedo readings, GPS tends to be 2-3mph slower than what the speedo actually says. I have used the road piolot in mercs and the R32, and it is always 2-3, so my guess is chris..... you are a verry naughty boy
Brabus
Yes maybe twas a bit naughty but it was late at night, on an autobahn with no speed limit and very little traffic. Im sure there's people who have gone alot quicker there than meself. Im happy not to go any faster though, plenty quick enough for me. What was nice though is that it seems to have "losened up" the engine a bit more, exhaust is alot raspier now.

[/ QUOTE ] you mean you've broken it? The 155mph limit was part of a 'gentleman's agreement' between the major German manufacturers (excluding Porsche of course) as a result of the strong german green parties who traditionally have had a disproportionately strong influence in the Reichstag and local politics. I suppose the reasoning is that these green karnts are never going to buy an RS4 or M3 (because they are heathen) and so will never find out. Same goes for the Japanese 280 bhp max.....not sure of the story behind that though. Maybe its part of the WWII settlment!

[/ QUOTE ] Well, on our recent trip across the continent, Lagoo and I saw some big speeds on my GPS (into the 160s) on the autobahns and the cars were still pulling, albeit close to the rev limit! Both our cars are 'supposed' to be limited to 155Mph, but that's blatantly not the case..... Have to agree that anything over about 135Mph starts to feel seriously quick and the concentration levels double! Huge adrenaline rush though if you have a 3 mile straight in front of you, great conditions and no traffic..... JT
