1 year in a Golf GTi.

Well, the year in the GTi has come around very quickly...and I've thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

For the first time of vehicle ownership, I haven't had an itch to change what I'm driving after only a year. The 330d coupe was a sublime car - but I always had lingering thoughts about it's worth after the first year - so off it went to save me some money. The GTi on the other hand, I have no reason to sell.

Likes:

It's comfort - I have the cloth recaros, and although I've been told the leathers are brilliant - I just don't do leathers. It's ergonomically excellent - spacious, yet everything you need as a driver is easily accessible and well crafted. It's boot size and rear leg room is excellent also.

Performance and Agility - The car is very much a Jekyll and Hyde - sober when cruising - but once you open the taps and decide to have a but of fun, boy does it like to dance. Although there are hatchbacks like the current Civic Type R , which would probably eat it around corners - i can't match the GTI for it's mixture of comfort and cornering ability.

The car has been re-mapped for about 4 months now - and it's been turned from a very capable hot hatch - to an absolute giant killer. It's straight line performance is lairy (keeping it all into context, of course) although it's acceleration out of corners has been effected by the extra torque - on a dry day, it'll just about keep it's line - on a wet - forget it!

Looks - I think the new GTi just looks too tubby. Especially the rear. The Mk5 GTi, in black and even in 5 door guise, still looks the part for me. Stylish, yet conservative.

Stereo system - I have the 10 speaker (i think, or is it 8?) sound system and it's brilliant! especially with my punjabi Bhangra beats! LOL!!

Loathes:

Can't REALLY think of any major loathes to be honest.

I agree on the looks of the MKV vs MKVI, the MKVI is the first time a new golf has come out that I have not thought was a step forward, the MKV GTi looks the business, looks like it means business, the MKVI could be any other model in the range, certainly a GTDI. Don't get me wrong, not a bad looking car, but it just doesn't look mean enough for a GTi.

I got very close to buying a GTi, in the end I went with another 1 series, only cause my last 1 series is the car I have enjoyed the most, so better the devil you know, but there is something about the GTi that appeals.

  • 1 month later...

I agree about the looks, Mk5 is better, imo, than the Mk6. However, having spoken to the Editor of VWDriver ( known him for years) he tells me that Mk6 refinement and quality of the interior is way ahead of the Mk5.

As a example he says that the Mk6 turns in and holds on, from the factory, in a way only a Mk5 with a number of aftermarket tweeks does. The engine is also very smooooth and quiet ( very subjective is engine noise, I personally prefer quiet especially inside the cabin but I understand that plenty of people do not !)

I am one of the ones that presfers to hear the engine from inside - adds to the driving experience  I've seen more and more MKVI's now and have grown to really admire them. Looks-wise, the MKV comes out tops, but I keep on hearing that the MKVI is leagues ahead of the MKV. The MKV has a quality interior and I'm yet to see the inside of the MKVI, but it must be very good.

Back on topic, I had no issues whatsoever with my MKV GTI. The best of the GTI's that I owned by far. Modded, they're even better +++

....Me too! Aftermarket engine mounts has really added to that enjoyment.

Give it a year or two and there'll be some tasty aftermarket mods for the Mk6 which will address the things we may be critical of. The Mk6 GTI engine is supposed to be very good indeed I'm told by those who know such things.

....Not to a Mk6 GTI and doubtful to a Golf R. I guess it depends how well my much modified Mk5 GTI lasts - 78k miles in 4.5 years but serviced every 10k and well maintained and garaged. I've just done a 280-mile trip in shocking rain and some of it in the dark - She handles and performs beautifully and I enjoy every mile - Why change? She's the most enjoyable car I've ever owned - Taut and tactile, great driveability, not the fastest on the road but plenty fast enough for the road and no slouch on track either.

After 4.5 years I still feel the same joy - Perhaps even more so, due to my chosen mods.

i totally agree, in july this year i sold my e46 m3 which i owned for 3.5 years didnt really need to sell it but a friend kept badgering me to plus it needed near 3k spending on it, so i needed a car to keep me going for 12 months or at least until till the 997s/e90 m3 itch gets scratched! so along came a mint 5 door mk5 gti in red with 35k on the clock an approved used vw, i had one as courtesey car back jan 2005 while my r32 was in for a service and i used to hate saying it but this is "as good as the r32 and easier to drive and more economical" didnt sound bad either (although my r32 did have a cat back supersprint).

its just an allround good car imo and yes i will be getting mine remapped as soon as the weather gets better, dont know who to go with yet ie superchips, revo.
