Now I have a dog, I need the RS6!

Think I'll look at getting an RS6 Avant in the New Year now I have a pup to cart around. Will look at getting a wrap or something on the rear bumper so she can just jump in and out without a worry.

I know nothing about them other than they're quite awesome (for what they are). It seems I can get on 03/04 reg with around 60k miles for £16-17k. Incredible car for the money surely?

Anyway, what should I be looking out for or avoiding? When do belts/major services/discs etc need doing? Would rather get a slightly higher milage car thats just had it all done, rather than a lower milage one that needs it all doing!

Thanks, looking forward to hearing the do's and don't of RS6 ownership. Woo hoo.

I take it that you mean the 4.2 V8 rather than the V10?

I loved mine.. it was awesome in just about every repect.

Some things to think about though:

1) Insurance isn't cheap and very expensive to run as a company car.

2) It drinks fuel.. expect around 16mpg

3) There are two versions.. the RS6 and the RS6 Plus (more power, limited no's)

4) There are reported problems with the DRC (leveling suspension) which involved a recall.. so make sure there are no problems with that.

5) Don't forget that these cars wil now be out of warranty.. If you buy from an Audi dealer I expect you can work something out, otherwise it 'could' be expensive for a repair.

Other than that.. a great car.. quick, not too flashy, holds loads.. and did i mention that it's quick

Yeah, the old V8 one. I've managed to get an ins quote of £1500 which given my track record and my stats etc. thats not too bad.

I don't do a great deal of miles so thats not at issue, its all about smiles per mile as far as I'm concerned. There seem to be a few still under warranty. That will be worth looking out for then.

*splurt spits coffee over computer screen*, have you seen how much the Skoda Superb costs these days? hardly value for money, and it still has the stigma of 'that' badge, which will never be taken seriously.

Almost as funny as Garcon's joke!

An old neighbour was out polishing his Octavia RS thing and I remember saying outloud to myself "It don't matter how hard to polish it mate...".

Shame really, but I guess thats why they're cheaper than the rest of VAG's motors.

Anyway, this isn't a "What estate shall I buy" thread so back to the RS6!! I think Avus silver is my colour choice...

Thing is Tipex, for those that can look beyond the badge the Superb is almost certainly the best estate car in the VAG stable, this side of a new RS6.

I'm not saying it isn't a good car, It's just not good value, Skoda's used to be cheaper than others, but not any more, the new Superb is very expensive for what it is, Skoda seem to think they are an upmarket brand all of a sudden.

I had a brand new Superb for 3 years, but when the new model came out, the prices increased dramatically, and it simply isn't worth the money, given the choice, you'd be an idiot not to buy a Passat instead.

Anyway, RS6, nice car, that dark blue isn't nice though, Personally I'd be after black, silver or grey.

Plenty of truth in that. New Skodas aren't the great value they used to be unless you have a very friendly dealer who can chip you about 15% or so. I like the new Superb, but if I was in the market for one I most definitely wouldn't buy new.

Besides, the new Legacy estate is better and cheaper! :P

(Edit - and uglier... :uhoh: )

I like the dark blue in that eBay ad, Moro Blue, only available on the RS's I think and a lovely deep colour.

Sprint Blue is just a bit too bright for me on something that size.

That's Mugello Blue, loved my saloon, but was never 100% about it on the Avant (might have been 95% though) - looks great when clean and in sunlight (it's pearl, so it catches hints of sunrise/sunset colours brilliantly), but just looks dark blue if you abuse it and never clean it properly (and I should know).

Agree that Sprint is a little lairy for something that big and square.

Oh, and on the subject of what to look for, when you test drive it (you must test drive before buying, no matter what!) by all means let it warm up and then have some fun, but before that, while it's cold (make sure you ask the seller to leave to to stand for as long as possible before you go to view), drive is slowly in Tip mode and check for rubberbanding - the lockup should be operating from 1400 rpm if not lower in Tip mode (it will program slip in D or S), so creep it off and cog up as soon as you are able to and give it throttle to make it "pull" the gearbox, and you'll feel it if the clutch bands are slipping. Do this in all gears.

Also, get it up to 70 and (where it's safe to do so) let it freewheel down to a halt, and let it downshift itself. There shouldn't be any hard clunking.

Also, check suspension. Leaky DRC has been mentioned (look for oily sheen on the shock absorbers, more pronounced near the tops) and also try to go at low speed (10mph or less ideally) up an incline at an angle (think multi-story car park ramp at a 45 degree angle if you can find an equivalent) and listen for creaking that's not from the interior (it will probably creak a bit inside, the C5 chassis does twist a tiny bit, especially compared to an A8) and could be suspension woes. Also, do a full-width speed bump at 10 or 15mph straight on. DRC will close the central valve if both left and right sides are compressed at the same time, so it will feel rock hard. If it doesn't, the DRC valve could be stuck open, or more likely it's lost pressure in the diagonal lines.

Great fun car to drive, cheap to buy, but repairs are expesnive, especially the engine (which has to come out for anything more than an oil change)and gearbox, so you may want to look for an extended warranty, they are a bit thirsty (the heavier V10 is slightly better IMHO!) and the cost of things like brake discs and pads will make your eyes water. But there's not much will make a fridge go faster! :roflmao:

I don't think it can once its been lapsed but I think it used to be 1.5k. Warranty direct seem to be the favourites but soon they might stop doing the RS6 as it is becoming older, I have also heard WD do discounts if you have scrapped the troublesome DRC. Check RS246.com :: The World's #1 Audi S and RS Enthusiast Website lots of info on there.

In a nutshell.

I loved my RS6 plus at the time but looking back it really is an old car now.

When my lease was up I couldn't find anyone to buy it and was happy to hand it over to the leasing company (with a much higher residual value than it was worth).

Last time I looked it was still for sale...
