OK - but I'm amazed that folk pay £200 for a pair of jeans, pay £150 for a pair of trainers etc.etc. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but buying a car like the RS3 is a personal choice, for many "it's only money" still exists and there are ways and means offered by manufacturers to ensure that over inflated vehicles fly out of the Dealerships. +++

Not sure you'll get 4 grand for the Golf though... you might need to add to the deposit. :bike:

Garcon - you know fine well that I don't own the Golf - it's rented !! Don't frett though, I'm not having an RS3. My flight with the RS4 taught me a valid lesson and I'll only rent from here on in again !!! :D

That is not a style Robin. It looks like Audi have been to Halfords for the wheels.

....I'm not a lover of Halfords, but what you're saying is that Audi's style of those RS3 wheels are not to your taste. You seem rather conventional (and stick-in-the-mud?) in your tastes.

I think you would be wiser to reserve judgement until you see them on a RS3 in the flesh.

....Reading other threads as well, I'm beginning to think that the 'new' MrMe is actually the TsNer who calls himself Chav. Or vica versa of course. :)

Hey I'm not an old, argumentative, man-city loving geordie with a :oneseries:

Well 6-series actually, but there's no smiley for that. :ffs:

OK so with chrome mirrors and normal coloured alloys that could look RS-like - if the arches were an inch or two fatter and it had 2 big oval exhausts at the back.

But its sodding dated.

Which makes me wonder - why are RS/M etc variants always at the end of a lifecycle ...derr!

- surely it makes more sense for them to have all the latest gubbins and techno-gabble and act as the leader/role-model example for the latest/newst generation, and attracting people to invest in that new generation.

- no-one is going to look at the new RS3 and think "Cool, best car ever - one day maybe, but in the meantime I'll get the new 2.0T version instead which will be replaced in 8 months time."

:ffs:

Late to this but what I can't work out is why anyone would want one for the same price as a 997 C2S or M3 or C63. £40k is a crazy amount of money for one of these and I don't even think they look that special. I've not seen one in the flesh of course.

Edited to add - if you believe the Audi site they are flaming quick though (incidentally, they state both 4.6 and 4.7 as the 0-60 run).

Plus one on Soulboy's post except that I do like the DSG, wouldn't have a car without it now. Most of the top end performance cars now come with a flappy paddle variant, that trend is being pushed down the food chain. That can only be down to the majority of customers wanting said option.

Must be the "Demographic Profile" of an ageing population............or another sign of creeping "Americanisms" Either way if you are doing the M25 commute, DSG every time, otherwise you can have it nothing like "stirring the porridge" as part of the driving experience

Oh and when it goes wrong out of warranty, that is Mechatronic goes into meltdown mode, minumum £2k fix only at stealers.........I would not touch a second hand DSG based car, too many issues and expenses associated when it goes wrong, and I have yet to drive one, that does not suffer with hesitation from rest, particularly when cold, binned my R32 V after three months with it, as I just did not like it , and believe me I was trying very hard to like it as the finacial implications of changing cars were not exactly in my best interests at the time.

On the comment about car prices in general going up, well yes of course they are - but I don't think I've seen two more vastly over-priced cars in recent months as the Golf R and the RS3.

I'm not saying other cars aren't getting pricey, we could be here all day. I'm saying that some, and it seems to be the sporting VW/Audi end, appear to be getting to levels more akin to a joke.

The point about 'people don't actually buy cars' so don't pay the £40k is irrelevant surely, because however you pay for it the payment is relative to the price - so you're just going to be paying an even more obsene amount per month for an RS3 than for another chavved up hot hatch from someone else.

Andrew said the point I was going to raise too. £40k buys you a very very nice 911 C2/C4S. A proper car. Not as practical, perhaps, but the point is that Audi prices new are starting to mean people could look seriously at other cars they'd have never even contemplated. I just cannot understand how anyone of sane mind can possiblt think £40,000 is a good price for a fast little hatchback that is, however you look at it, the posh end of the chavtastic scale and a car for people seeking to impress young girls or easily impressed lads on the high street. That's what it shouts out to me anyway.

See, I'm with you Chris but trying to see the other side it IS flaming quick and I'm not sure there is much out there, as practical, that can whisk you to 62 in 4.6/4.7, that you can buy new for £40k. I've not researched this point, it might be b0llocks.

I'd imagine the tuning potential isn't bad either.

I'd still not have one though. Unless I won one on Bullseye, Play Your Cards Right or The Price Is Right (the former prize to pull my speedboat of course).

Agree re the RS variants, although I think Audi have clicked onto that now, with the RS5 coming out when it has.

BMW already clicked onto this though, surely, with the E92 M3 coming out when it did? OK, so the CSL came later in the E46 lifecycle, but the M3 was already a great car.

1 Series M is late coming out, but I genuinely think that BMW (having originally said they weren't going to do one) have reacted to what their customers want with it.

I think everyone needs to bare in mind we dont live in a communist country and people can choose how they spend their money and what they want to do.

Here is me for example:

I have bought a Golf R - which I agree is overpriced on the face of it.

However, I got a good deal on it and hope the residuals may be good due to rarity.

BUT

I also need a car I can keep for 3 years, as I use it daily for business (and therefore dont want anything out of warranty)

I can offset some of the depreciation off as business use.

As a financial adviser, I need to have something that is not too flash, as it rubs clients up the wrong way.

But, I also cant drive round in a Ford Cortina.

My g/f has a TT - so anything 2 seater is a non starter.

I found my S3 quite dull.

Having had my R32 nicked in a nasty robbery, I need something to fit in the garage.

I also hated the DSG on that car and dont want another automatic.

I live on a hill and 4wd was essential last winter. I got out when all my neighbours were stuck.

I also priced up a decent 135 Coupe and it worked out more than the R.

The Golf puts a grin on my face every time I drive it.

So thats just me.

Everyone else will have their own circumstances, so I reckon we should avoid insisting our own logic and criteria be applied to everyone else in the world.

....I've bold highlit your words as they are exactly the point I made earlier. I love Porsches and my current favourite is the Cayman S but it, and two-seaters like it, which one could buy secondhand for £40k simply don't provide practicality for my personal needs, i.e. seats for up to 4 passengers and an adequate load capacity. Like most folks here I love performance cars and believe they are far safer (when driven responsibly) and so the high-end Golfs and the RS3 perfectly meet my needs. I'd love it to be cheaper, but that's not the reality.

It's not "insanity" to pay £44k with options for a "fast little hatchback", it's simply something which you wouldn't do and I can appreciate and respect that. Why can't you appreciate and respect the needs of others?
