Hearing better things and that Jules is breathing unassisted. There are some pics turning up on the web that show just how bad an accident it was. The roll hoop is totally missing, looks like he went under the vehicle and was at 218mph when the crash started. Fingers crossed.

Those pictures where he's in the car having his head supported (1) are quite shocking, he was mm away from being decapitated, thank goodness there weren't any workers there.

Not sure were you got 218mph from (Daily Fail?), even in the dry it's only taken at 135mph / 217kph.

In the wet that curve was being taken at 111mph / 180 kph according to Nico Hulkenberg, no telemetry has been released yet but a 50G impact being banded about. Kimi's suffered a 47G impact in a crash at Silverstone earlier this year.

This incident is quite similar to the Maria Di Villota accident in 2012. Some of the people at Marussia probably have an eerie flashback moment to that.

Update:  BBC reporting he is out of surgery: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/formula1/29499545

Did anyone else think it was a bit strange how long it took the commentary team to work out it was Jules in trouble rather than Adrian? I guess it just shows that when a Marussia vanishes off the timing screens nobody notices. Hope he pulls through, never nice to see the dark side of a sport we all love :(

Still, they missed that Jules had dropped off the timing screen when everyone else was showing at 'PIT" - the FOM feed seemed to know something was up as, in the space of a few minutes, they cut several times to the shot of concerned merchanics in the Marussia garage - a garage that normally gets virtually zero attention...

Sky picked it up almost straight away despite the FOM feed being confusing. The director obviously chose not to show the accident in repeat ( footage does exist apparently ) for sensitivity reasons.

I have to say the post race coverage by the Sky team under difficult circumstances was excellent. Simon Lazenby, who has come in for criticism in the past, was spot on in his tone.

Keeping everything crossed for Jules.

Sky saw Sutil walking around, so they jumped to the conclusion that it must have been a marshal. But then they got a call from one of their reporters whom I believe must have been near the site of the crash, who saw a Marussia. From the TV screens it's totally understandable they did not see it.

This seems to be standard practice, and in good taste, for sports broadcasters for example both Kimi's and Rob Collard's crashes at Silverstone weren't replayed over and over again till they knew the drivers were okay. Unlike Marco Simoncelli accident which was repeated several times.

They knew Jules had gone off at the same point hence their initial call of oh it's a Marshal once the Medical car was on track. This is a logical shout given the circumstances.

Respect to Adrian. He stayed at the scene whilst the medical team were assisting Jules. Then behaved with great composure once back in the paddock.

Update:

According to Skysports

Contrary to some reports, he is not breathing unaided.

"We're not getting any official updates from the hospital but I understand that Jules is in a very critical condition, still fighting for his life, and I can clear up a couple of pieces of misinformation which have been picked up by the French media and a couple of outlets in the UK," Sky Sports News HQ's Craig Slater reported at 6am UK Time on Monday morning.

It was strange at the time watching on the BBC, they didn't really grasp that another drive had gone off at all. The feed showed concerned mechanics in the Marussia garage but they didn't mentioned it (I've not gone back to check). It was only really after the race was stopped did they join the dots.

I can't help thinking this isn't going to end well no matter how positive I want to feel that he will make a full recovery. Incidents like Maria had in the testing show how fragile we really are especially when our head is subject to some blunt trauma or sudden deceleration.

I'm unfortunate enough to have witnessed a crash at Oulton Park with a very young Formula Ford driver tragically died going head on into a barrier at far lower speeds to F1; but the barrier wasn't protected and he was going a fair speed, the other drives escaped un-injured during the same incident.

Fingers still crossed and hoping for the best.

Having now seen the video its really sad to see that although they were waving double yellows at the start of it, they had changed to green flags well before Sutils car and the JCB had finished their work and were out of the way. The impact was huge, lifting the back of the JCB clear off the ground  :(
