So I assume residuals on pre 29 March 06 cars will be higher than post March cars? (of the same ilk)

[/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely. I reckon mine will have depreciated at least a grand or so overnight. First registered on 30/03/06.....having been ordered since November 2005!

Now wheres the feckin justice there Gordon? You Cnut!

I cant tell you how annoyed this has made me. I can afford it, but its a snide retrospective tax, that I had no idea of when I ordered the car.

....Sounds to me as if they're closing the gap where pre-budget rates would apply. Fecking bastards!!!!!!!!!! I'm not effected but I'm still angry about their attitudes! openfire.gif

As with fuel duty rates, the Government today announces VED rates for this year and

the next two years to further sharpen environmental signals to motorists to purchase more

fuel efficient vehicles and continue to support the development of low-carbon market,

including:

• raising the rate for the most polluting cars (band G) to £300 in 2007-08 and

£400 in 2008-09; and reducing the rate for low-carbon band B cars to £35 in

2007-08, with that rate then frozen for the subsequent two years;

• raising the rates for graduated bands C-E, cars registered before 2001 and all

light goods vehicles by £5 in each of the next three years;

• raising the rates for graduated band F by £10 in 2007-08, then £5 in each of

the subsequent two years;

• in 2007-08 only, freezing the rates for motorbikes in the lower band with

higher bands increasing by £1-£2; and freezing VED rates for Heavy Goods

Vehicles (HGV), Special Types Vehicles, Combined Transport Vehicles and all

vehicle categories that are linked to the basic goods rate;7 and

• aligning the VED rates for petrol and diesel cars as the differential in nitrogen

oxides and particulate matter emissions for new cars is expected to fall to

close to zero once Euro V and VI emission standards become mandatory.

• Changes to this year’s VED rates take effect from 22 March 2007. All changes

in subsequent years take effect from licenses commencing 1 April in the

respective year.

Thanks for that OliH, saved my self a few quid there did it on line

Even if you had 6 months tax left, like I do, it would make sense to buy another 12 months now, and then using the form from te DVLA or post office, send your old tax disc back for refund, and even then you will save £50!! I know its only £50, but like TESCO says, 'Every little helps' 169144-ok.gif

how do i know i what band my car is??

[/ QUOTE ]

Your V5 (registered keeper) document will tell you the CO2 rating of the car. You can then use the table at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524 to figure out how much tax you'll pay.

It's all been blown a bit out of proportion, imo, as the big increase on excise duty only applies to cars over 225 g/km registered after 23rd March (i.e. this Saturday).

Looking at the table on the web site, if you own a car registered between 1 March 2001 and 22 March 2007, the max you'll pay is £205 this year, so if you've got an R32 (276 g/km on my V5), then there's bugger all difference.

Does it put me off buying a new RS4 after Saturday? No, not really - if I was spending £46K+ on a car, I don't think £300 in the first year then £400 next year would worry me.

But then I've not got £46K+ to spare at the minute... ROLLEY~14.GIF

Looks like the 3.0tdi v6 engine just makes it below the g-band. Engine produces 223 co2's bang g starts at 225, does it matter that its a late 06 car or as long as its below band g level??

[/ QUOTE ]

No, if it's below 225 you're in a Band F maximum, regardless of age.

If it's above 225, then the older the vehicle, the better off you are!

If you disregard the year.... it shows how daft this all is as my A4 S Line quattro is 228 gms -- a family car - sort of - up there with all these

Not anymore, as you can see Euro V VI cars are no more polluting and will be now the same as petrol. This actually means there was no increase for diesel cars. 169144-ok.gif

Just as well I didn't buy a new toy last year 169144-ok.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Whilst it is hardly an RS4, the tax on my still incredibly non-environmentally friendly weekend toy is high enough considering the tint mileage it covers. Doubling the tax from 175 to 350 and I'd have to - grudgingly - say bring on pay-per-mile.

Are the government just buttering us up ready for its introduction?

Ian

NB. Good to know you don't pay more tax for say an A4 PD 170 quattro over a straight fwd model, just because "it's a 4x4."

The problem is there are more people in this country like yourself that probably think this, but it would be the worse thing to ever happen to this country.

We used to be a self supporting country, and remember that is quite important as we are also an island, but as the years have gone by our government has taxed our companies higher than most other places, and taxed our fuel higher than most other place too, up until the point where we can no longer compete.

So all the major comapnies, all the big products, all the things we class as essentials are now brought in from overseas, all we are left with that we can really call our own is the small independant traders that can offer something different, those that don't have to compete on a price, but offer a service.

If we start introducing pence per mile that will disappear, we will only be left with the big clothes stores, flat pack furniture, processed fruit and veg from Asda, fast food chains, etc. etc.

As an example we have a footwear agency, now most of the footwear and clothing industry is run by agents, guys and girls who take on 3 or 4 different brands and sell to the multiples and the independant stores. We have a 9 week period from when we get our samples to when the factory closes the order books so they can start making the product. In that 9 weeks I have to see 87 customers, they are all over East Anglia, Midlands, Wales, Lincs and S.Yorks. The only way I can get them all in is to arrive at the first appointment at 9am and try to get to another before the owner leaves for the day,this means I have absolutely no choice in leaving at 6am and setting off again at 5/6/7pm, the times when we will be charged at up to £1.30 a mile on major roads.

At the moment I pay £5500 a year in fuel tax to do my mileage. We worked out that if we did half the mileage on these main roads at peak times, a quarter on minor roads but again peak times and the other quarter in the lowest band it would cost us around £30,000 a year in charges. At that point I would not be able to carry on with my job, everyone I have spoken to in my industry are the same. I have been speaking to alot of people who travel for a living and they are all saying the same thing, the guy across the road from me has a fruit and veg business with 4 shops, he said that when this charge comes he will have to close, he is not big enough to dictate to the delivery companies that he wants them to drive through the night, only Asda, Waitrose, Sainsburys have that power.

You will see alot of business' disappear virtually over night, we will be left with these big stores only, who also get all their products from overseas, from the states and china, so well done this government, by taxing us so highly we are not making the world a greener place we are just giving up what little control we had left to the worlds biggest polluters!! Do you think the States and China will step back and say 'You know what? with all this power we have lets make the world a better place!' Of course not, they will just build more power stations and factories so they can keep up with the demand coming out of the UK!

We need to stop taxing this country and start being competative again, give tax releif to our companies that are clean so we can start to become self supporting again and compete on a global scale. At the moment we are a fecking joke!!
