century_one
Just ordered an Avant with GSM mobile prep in front armrest. I realise this has a bluetooth connection that allows handsfree calls but what is the bluetooth interface and charger that is mentioned in the A4 brochure? Brochure quote: GSM mobile telephone preparation in front centre armrest with hands-free function, Bluetooth interface, roof aerial for optimal reception (Avant only) and charger. A phone adapter is required at extra cost. Please see your Audi Centre for phone compatibility and full details. Must be combined with multi-function steering wheel and DIS. And what is the adapter that is available at extra cost and what does it do? Thanks!
TDiAvant
These are the adapters (Phone Cradles) http://www.audi-accessories.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=
century_one
Cheers. So what functions are available without the adapter?
craigyb
Just the same except without the charging and better reception. The cradles limit what phones you can use.
century_one
Got a nokia mobile at the minute but was looking to change it for a new model in a few months anyway so its pointless buying an adapter just yet. So you can still access the phone through the MF steering wheel? And will the phonebook function work through the DIS?
terrymcg
Yep, if you have a compatible phone via bluetooth you can still access the phone through the MF steering wheel, and the phonebook function work through the DIS. I find it is a very good system, although I have never seen BMW's bluetooth system working!
century_one
I take it 99% of all bluetooth phones are compatible though?
terrymcg
I think they are all compatible, ie. you will be able to make calls through the system. I think some problems arise in transfering the phone book to the cars DIS, what phone have you got?
century_one
Its a Nokia 6233, pretty common phone really so hopefully there should be no problems? Works fine in my current A3 but that is will a nokia car kit which itself picks up motorola and sony ericson phones so surely the audi gsm kit won't have any issues? terrymcg
Nah a Nokia 6233 will work fine, they also have just brought out the GSM cradle for that phone as well.
PetrolDave
The list of phones which you can get a cradle for is VERY short, and cradles don't tend to appear until a LONG time after a phone goes on sale. Personally I don't see the point in having a ugly cradle in the car - OK you get coverage in fringe areas, but there isn't many of those where I live & drive, and you get your phone charged, but most phones have batteries that last more than a week - so what's the point? deanobeano
Having just come from a 5 series, I can state that the phone system is better in the Audi. Jusr remember to 'flick' the steering wheel button to move from a-b etc on your contact list. (you couldn't do that with the Bimmer)
century_one
As this is my first Audi phone kit I know very little about how it works. How does the car pick up the address book from your phone? Is there a sim reader or is this done manually somehow?
deanobeano
Once you have paired your phone the address book will transfer automatically. (if your phone is 100% compatible that is) when I paired my Nokia N73, the contacts wouldn't transfer automatically -but i fixed it using a small program on the phone that was designed to sync with nokia's 'car phone'. Once you have done this, the car will inform you of a call on the central DIS and away you go. (your sim card stays in your phone and I use a charger to keep the phone battery topped up) Hope this helps.
