Dave
I'm thinking of bidding for a new plate at auction, and i thought i might get the business to pay for it. If i do,can i get the vat back on purchase, and could i still use it on a personal car, or would it have to be used on a company car?
Calm Chris
What value will the plate bring to your business? I'd imagine that you could claim under marketing expense if the plate is very relevant to your business.
Dave
Yea, It's a tough one isn't it! It's probably a benefit in kind, so not straight forward. I was hoping to get out of the tax.
drpellypo
I'm getting a private plate for the van, and I can, so far as I know, put that through as marketing. However, it's going on the wonder van, so there's no confusion about personal use etc.
Mook
We've got five private plates with the letters of the company in them. If the car is registered to the company, then there won't be any benefit in kind and you should be able to reclaim the VAT. If it's registered in your name, then it could be seen as benefit in kind, although you'll only pay whatever your tax band is on the purchase price. bells0
My private plate is sat doing nothing at the mo thanks to me going back to a co. car. Can't really be arsed sorting it with the contract hire co to get it put on the bimmer. Do i have to pay £25 a year to keep it??
Mook
Bells - Yes. £25 to extend the entitlement for 12 months. Make sure you do it well before the certificate expires. Once it's gone, it's gone! Wopps - When you buy a plate from the DVLA, you can add a "nominee", so you buy the plate in your name, then have the company put on as a nominee, so you can transfer the plate onto any vehicle owned by the company. Same thing applies when you buy a plate from someone personally - you get yourself put on as a nominee.
