I took (and passed) my test back in '88 in my Instructor's Metro Vanden Plas :roflmao:Can't remember the engine, but I'm guessing 1.3?? Much of my learning was done in my Mum's Cavalier 1.6L hatch...in beige

My first car was a bright red Fiat Uno 55 S (S for Super IIRC), bought very) second hand in '89

My first crash was done in some style; I rolled my Dad's then new E34 520i in '92 :o I still get reminded of this even now; he still has a 5 series...

Quite a few Uno's as first cars on here - I loved my Uno at the time... I saw in this week's Autocar that Fiat are bringing it back :D

Peter

The gearbox was really vague and the clutch cable was notorious for failing but the handling and the Blaupunkt stereo were great. The Tipo was good too, even if the 1.4 guzzled fuel.

My mate had a Fiat Uno Turbo, the mk1 version, it was utterly fecking sh1te, my Alfa (which was significantly older) walked all over it in every department, he just couldn't keep up with me (Alfa was only a 1.5).

And bits were forever falling off the Uno, and it broke down every five minutes, and it was rusting from the inside out!

He soon got rid of it, and bought a Renault 5 Turbo instead, which was almost as unreliable, but at least when it worked, it was quite fast!

Passed in a 1.0L Corsa (I think?)

First car: MKV Ford Escort 1.4LX (with spoiler, metallic paint, 'lectric windows!)

first crash: MKV Ford Escort 1.4LX, 5 weeks later

Reason: An inconsiderate homeowner put his garden and wall in my way.

Took my test in a K reg 1 litre metro, think it was the first year that it used a rover engine.

First car, Ford Fiesta 1.1 Popular Plus, which I had to share with my brother and he rear ended 2 months after I passed, bastard!

First crash astra 1.4 expression, drove into the back of someone at a Stop/Go sign on my way to work at 6am! Feck knows why now it was there so early. Drove into theback of a rover 600 H623 AAG

2nd crash, aquaplaned round a bend at about 50mph through hedge and into a telegraph post, 8 month old mkiii golf gti, over 5k damage to my car, 1k bill to upright the pole and courtesy car for 6 weeks! Oh and arm in plaster as I had a suspected fracture from punching the car after getting out lol

Test: Audi 80. My dad's car. Also did most of my lessons in it.

1st Car: Talbot Samba.

1st Crash: Audi 80. My dad's car again. Rear ended another vehicle in stationary traffic. I had my mum in the car with me. :o

I also crashed my Talbot Samba: I was tuning my radio as I left a Sainsburys car park. I drove into a barrier around a lamp post. I felt a bit of a lamp for doing it.

First test pass: Corsa 1.9 TDi

First car: L reg 316i bought off my parents which I used to drive to school (and thought I was the b*ll*cks)

First crash: 316i - Picked up my mates from Dover when they missed the last bus to Canterbury after their drunken jaunt to France. Much arsing about led to a lack of concentration on the dual carriageway, random roundabout, barrel-rolling, car written off. Got out of the car covered in Gin which exploded on the back of my chair. Was 18 months after I passed my test so 6 points, retake of tests.

Second test pass: Arosa 1.4 TDi

No accidents since.

It's the only way you learn your, and your cars limits, if you've never crossed them, you won't know how good you could be/not be!

Funnily enough I don't think a Fiat Uno had any. It could handle farm tracks, being thrown in to b-road corners and general new driver stupidity with ease. If only the clutch cable wasn't made of Primark quality elastic.

Passed test in driving school Nova 1.2

For a few weeks I borrowed my mum's car - Datsun Sunny 120Y

First car I bought was a Fiesta XR2 mk2

First accident - same XR2 - another XR2 slammed in the back of me whilst I was stationary allowing an oncoming bus to pass under a narrow railway bridge. We weren't racing - honest :o
