cruiser647
There is a bloke that workr with me. He is seriously considering getting a Phaeton. The 3.0 TDi. Especially after seeing my A8. I know they are different beasts, but is there anything that goes wrong in an expensive way on them? Apart form depreciation that is! He'd be looking at one about 7+ yrs old and well north of 100K miles (which to me, is NOT an issue) Thanks!
Tipex
We had one for a while, PPC magazine wanted to use it for one of their buyers guides, but unfortunately it coincided with Mrs T giving birth, so it didn't happen. We didn't keep it long in the end, not because it wasn't a good car, but simply because the MPG was absolutely hysterically bad, not even in the same ballpark as any of the BMW or Mercs of comparable size. Mook
27-30ish mpg, because they're heavy old buses. Under-powered really, which is a shame. Expect to lose a lot mroe than you thought when you sell it. But he's probably decided that's all fine, I guess. Electricals - everything is electric on them. Early ECUs can go bang. Don't handle as well as an A8, 7-Series or S-Class. Still, it could be worse - he could be looking at a 5 litre V10 diesel
Tipex
To drive it felt exactly the same as my Skoda Superb, understeery, no traction so wheel span easily out of junctions, heavy wallowy barge. I'd have loved to have seen 27-30MPG, we weren't even close to that. However, if you aren't bothered about MPG, performance or handling, they do make very comfy, nice places to waft along in. cruiser647
I'll make sure he gets the 4-Motion model, not the FWD job. He's currently nursing an S-reg C200..... Which he is spending out on. New wiper motor, suspension bits and now a new rear box as it fell off after going through some puddles. So, he just needs to hold onto it until March (Bonus time). I bet he'll go and buy a nasty old Jeepy thing with a lovely V8 that'll do 10 mpg at best. He doesn't do 'planning' or 'thinking before buying', but he will look and lust then ignore it! NewNiceMrMe
Cruiser, is the bloke a dickhead? The reason I ask is that it seems, to me at least, that to buy a used Phaeton you have to be a dickhead. You have to think it is a Bentley, that you're up there with Bill Gates in the wealth stakes and have a complete disregard for everyone else on the road. You have to drive down the centre of suburban streets and refuse to move from ongoing traffic, no matter who has the right of way. You also have to wait until people look before getting out of it, at which point you let them know it :"IS A PHAETON". They're almost as bad a E39 5 series drivers. In fact maybe they're worse than them. I know that is an outrageous claim, but I have yet to meet a Phaeton on the road that wasn't been driven like it owned it and leased it to you with at least 2 years in arrears owing. cruiser647
Haha! Apparently his driving is pretty attrocious! I haven't had the pleasure of being a passenger nor following him!
NewNiceMrMe
Oh well he's half way there. Just tell him you've asked the internet and they said yes he should buy one.

drpellypo
I toyed with the idea of getting one of these when I got rid of the Passat. What put me off was a story that the hazard switches can die (I've had two audi's that have done that, so believed it to be true) but in the case of the Phaetons, the hazard switch is integral to the main wiring loom, and the entire thing has to come out and be replaced which is £££££. Tipex
I very much doubt that is correct, it'll simply be the same switch that fails in all VAG cars of that era, possibly just a bit more involved in changing it given the fancy dash board. Mook
It's the comical plastic walnut dash that put me off ever even going in one again - one of our reps bought one and had it about 9 months before getting a sensible car.
garcon magnifique
Have you gone and bought a Phaeton NNMM?
Tipex
Lol, we had ours for about 9 months too, seems to be about the average length of ownership! And what's wrong with plastic wooden dashboards anyway?
garcon magnifique
It's not plastic wood. It's real, expensive wood wood made to look like plastic wood to help American buyers feel at home.
