Andrew
I declared my earnings and savings etc honestly. I thought they took them at face value so was under the impression I could have put any old guff down. More fool me when the fine came in.

Tricky1
Many thanks for these responses, chaps and chapesses...really very much appreciated. a real moment of madness from me....pissed off with myself but also feel a bit unlucky as ive been driving round at 65-70 for the past few years with no unmarked cars writing letters to me saying how nicely i'm driving. one bloody time just to get to the pub to see my mates cos i hardly go out....grrrrr. i doubt they'll believe me. anyway, wouldn't it be better for me to get a ban? especially if i could serve it while i was abroad with work. i dont want to be driving round on eggshells for the next 3 years on 6/7/8 points or whatever. what do you seriously reckon i'll get points wise and finewise? (un)fortunately i got my accounts for last year not long ago and profits were down...less than 10 grand according to my figures from my accountant...a little massaged, but hopefully they'll take pity on me with the fine...what can i expect? £500/600? either way, your thoughts and advice are really welcome...thanks again.... Tricky1
to mrme... ha...well there's not a lot of me lying about it on here, is there?!i even got in touch with the highways agency and asked them about my journey up there plus 3 or 4 other journeys i'd done recently along the motorway....all for work, all at 65/70.....i thought if they could track me, it'd be proof that i didn't usually speed.not surprisingly, they said they couldn't provide that information....would have been useful for me in mitigation...but not possible, apparently

A ban will have a harder impact on your insurance. How much, i don't know. I've said what I think you'll get - 6 points and £333. By the way, it's 4 years they stay on your licence, not 3, and some insurers will still count them for the entire duration. You won't be on eggshells if you normally stick to the limits. It's pointless worrying about ban this or points that - wait until you get the letter first. Oh and you don't go in and say "Please ban me" - it doesn't work like that. Scotty
You have to declare the ban for five years after sentencing (not from the date of offence). For me that meant it hung over me for 5.5 years. Not sure what impact it had on premiums over the years as I was only a named driver.
Luke
You don't want a ban. See your insurance get loaded. Hiring cars can be a no no too, I believe. Go and grovel, like we've all done. I wouldn't bother with a brief either. 6 points, £300-500 fine, pay the fücker monthly! If you have no points just say it was a moment of madness and it'll never happen again. Andrew
And if you have an old licence with old expired points on it, send off for a new clean one.

drpellypo
I stand utterly corrected. For some reason I had it in my head that 100mph could be up to a £5k fine. No idea where I got that from. Having looked it up, yes, £300 plus £33 costs is the max.
Ian_C
Over 100mph is a ban, by default, to the letter of the law. 20 years ago maybe, but not now, not on the motorway at least. Mates dad didn't get banned doing over 100 in his S2, and that was nigh on 20 years ago
garcon magnifique
I got the impression the 'automatic ban' was always a bit of a myth. Main threshold is between fixed pen and court summons. Magistrates are very protective of their degree of discretion on sentencing.
cruiser647
I suppose it depends if you are driving like an utter tw4t or just 'cruising along' at over 100 mph?

E-bmw
Got pulled over on the M18 at 100.52 in 1990 and ended up with a £150 (IIRC) ish fine & 6 points.
steve2
my wife went to court for 56 in a 40 DC, got a 2 week ban, £250 fine and that was with a barrister representing her, guess who had to pay the fine The magistrate said they wanted to make an example of speeding motorists although this was 10 years ago
NewNiceMrMe
56 in a 40? Bloody hell. I got away with 52 in a 30. No barrister. But I'm very nice as my name and avatar says.

I think I win the cock-waving speeding posts. Back in the early 90s I got clocked well into 60s in a 30 (on the empty metrocentre ring road, in my defence) and got off with a fixed penalty. I also got a severe bollocking. I would be lying if I said that bollocking didn't have a big effect and it goes a long way to explaining my strict adherence to 30 limits some 20 years later, if not my general driving style. Sometimes the realisation of a bullet dodged can be as big a deterrent to future offending than any ban or fine. NewNiceMrMe
I stick almost rigidly to 40, 50 and 60 limits. I don't dare abuse 30 limits. The risk just isn't worth the impatience. My motorway speeds never, ever go to anything like the speed I was caught at (105 mph). I also realise just how lucky I've been in the past. Not even close. 112mph, caught on in car video, in an Astra GTE, overtaking an unmarked police car, on a single carriageway nsl road. Let off with a bollocking. patently
Well, I got caught by a camera doing well over 120 in a 30 limit while driving the getaway car from that massive bank job that's been unsolved for years now and... and... no, not really
