Snail
Spent 6 hours in my tractor today, driving from one end of the country to the other. She did 400+ miles, no fuss, 50+MPG, and i got out tired and thats about it. Respect to the old girl

s4dreamer
She just keeps going doesn't she Snail - what a bargain that car will have been when you eventually sell up. I did 400+ miles in a Passat TDi on Sunday too - 200 at around 90mph (on empty French motorways) and 200 at around 80 (on busy English motorways). I only managed 40-something MPG, but that's not bad considering we had the car full of luggage, family and booze . Got out tired, but not uncomfortable. Have to say that my old A4 was better though - I could get out of that feeling fresh after a 300 mile drive.
Snail
she was a right little bargain (cheers for the help burti) I usually get 40ish MPG, but was sticking to the speed limit, due to seeing soo many speed traps recently. It quite supprises me how little difference there is in the economy when im driving like a granny, and driving like a ~@*&

drpellypo
How the pants do I manage to get an average of 80mpg on a run?! I even checked by doing the math, in case my computer had gone nuts. Really did average 80mpg, sticking to 60, on a 140 mile trip. Is someone putting magic fairy dust in the tank of my tractor?!

shao_khan
Mine is doing quite well - aveage since purchase is 47.6, average on a journey is usually around 55ish, although I am told I can improve this if I fit some 13" wheels.....

Even in controlled environments, the mpg is nowhere near that. The best managed I in my 130Tdi was an average of 58mpg measured over about 60 miles at about 40mph in 6th gear - some 1100 rpm........ gizze
Dave have a read of THIS post, I listed what mpg I was getting on my last few cars. On my 2.5tdi multitronic, my on board computer is showing 44mpg, it was last reset 2,300 miles ago so a pretty good indication of what I get generally. Compare this with the 1.8t I used for a week recently, and it was a week of usual driving, that gave me a return of just under 28mpg. I do between 25 and 28k a year, lets average it to 2,200 miles a month. 2.5tdi multitronic=44mpg which is 47 gallons @ £3.80=£190 month. 1.8T manual=28 mpg which is 79 gallons @ £3.80=£300.20 a month. Over 3 years that is a saving of £3,945. The cars prices new are 1.8 T Limited Edition Multitronic 163PS 8.9 £22,595 2.5 TDI Multitronic 163ps 9.1sec £25,450 The diesel is £2,855 more to start off with, but a 3 year old diesel with 75,000 on it will be worth at least £2,500 more so you get this back. I reckon over 3 years I save a lot by buying a diesel. If you do over 20,000 miles I reckon it is a no brainer, well, when I say save, I don't actually save anything because I end up putting the money I would have saved into toys for the car like Leather, xenons, Sat Nav etc. We did a trip back from St.Tropez in our A4 1.9tdi, left at 9.00am didn't stop once for fuel until we got to just outside calais, around 720 miles, which was 56 mpg, Superb !! and I was not taking it that steady either, you wouldn't get that from a petrol. shao_khan
Mine is a 1.9. I seem to recal that my consumption was pretty significantly better than Daz's on the last trip upto MK meet (same start point and desination, journey, etc), but then his car is bigger than mine!!!
