allgolfdup
OK...was cruising up to bath via the M5 last week from exeter!...when i noticed a lovely Aston Martin DB9 which had been trailing me since the centre of town. The road opened up and by god this Aston moved!...As it zooomed past a friend and i noticed that lo and behold little Noel Edmunds was perched (with pillows no doubt) at the steering wheel of this lovelely aston! Exited..i put the pedal to the metal too whislt shouting "DB9 vs VW G.T.I. Deal or No Deal?!!"...in fourth gear, my dear baby replied with a glorious miltek growl and was up Noel's chuff in the blink of an eye!DEAL!!...We saw him look in his rear view thinking "what the!?!?!?"...Now both cruising about 110- 120 mph..Noel put his foot down further, i anticipated this and was already foot flat! GOD was he surprised... I've never taken her to her limit, but at 140 mph she was only at 5,000 revs...eventually Mr.Edmunds exited the M5 at bristol ( probably to film the show)and gave me a flash of apreciation I can't wait to get her chipped.. It's true what they say...THIS CAR DEMANDS RESPECT!

allgolfdup
Dont get me wrong...the Aston is a bloody quick car and it did have us!But it was the fact that we could keep up after being fed dust!..plus Noel Edmunds was drivng!
Mollox
Maybe he couldnt reach through to the full range of the pedal's travel?
RedRobin
Brilliant, Mollox!! Obviously the GTI is generally no match for a DB9, especially on a M'way, but I understand what allgolfdup is saying: The GTI has superb acceleration and performs surprisingly well throughout her range - The rest is down to the driver and so you can never really say that one car can beat another on the basis of one informal test (not that you were saying such things). Btw, you going to Brighton Meet this coming Sunday? Would be cool to meet you some day.
Mollox
I know exactly what you mean. Remember I have a remapped S3 so I'm well used to the torque-rich on-boost abilities of such cars, just more so However, there is a limit and the Aston wasn't trying: pure and simple! The other thing is just how close 1 or 2 seconds to 60 can look like on the road. Very few cars are just going to drive clean away from another (see me vs the F40 for a clear demonstration of an exception to this rule though!!). I've felt that I've been "hanging on" to some very fast cars at times but introduce a stopwatch and the differences are plain to see I'm afraid. Brighton is looking a bit tricky, I'll only be 20 mins away but if I'm playing host I can't really leave. I will have to see how it goes. If its feasible I'll jump in the car and head down

Just what you need - A whole bunch of TSN car freaks for Sunday lunch. I'm told you are a good cook though I'll be there for 12noon but must leave at 3.00pm (it's a good 2 hour drive for me if the roads are clear). I'll doubtless catch you another time if not this one . I really like that A35-M27-A27 with all its fast roundabouts.

fresco1
Of course if it was a red GTI it would be faster, as TSN has proved many times over that red is quicker .. LOL
Mollox
You know that Enzo that crashed and snapped in half at 162 mph? Well it was racing me and losing when it happened. It was Nora Batty at the wheel too, I recognised Compo's flatcap dangling from the rearview so I know it was definitely her. I reached over and called her a frumpy old bat and she screamed back "Race you for your car, you little blighter" and before you know it we were off. I could hear the V12 scream but as soon as the turbo came on tap there really was no contest. She must have been about 5 car lengths behind when she lost it turning into a bend that the S3 just took in its stride. AWESOME! She won't do that again... allgolfdup
Made me laugh! Y'all have me all wrong!I'm not saying the G.T.Iis direct competition for a flippin DB9!..All im congratulating my lovely car for..is the fact that it didn't go down without a fight!..wher most other hatchbacks wouldhave thrown in the towel!Granted he might not have been trying..but i like to think that he was surprised..i was! bazza_g
[ QUOTE ] Not with Noel Edmunds driving! [/ QUOTE ] not sure why everyone's taking the micky out of Noel Edmonds driving - he's had a more successful racing career than probably everyone here In the 70's during the early part of his broadcasting career he was actually signed to drive for Team Ford/Castrol and competed with some success in rallying and on track, then in the late 70's went into offshore powerboating
