I too am looking for a derv that will do a high milage since my Passat TDI Auto is now feck'd!!!! mad.giffrown.gif

What is the opinion of the Auto box's!! ?

I would prefer a manual but as I am up and down the M25 and round London I want an Auto as it has been much easier but how long are the auto gear box's supposed to last?

And what can you do to increase their life?

my current car, a '94 405td estate, just turned 196k. Still tows horseboxes, other cars (im a self employed mechanic) and the caravan once a year (no im not a caravaner!) my previous car, a 205D had the engine from an '87 305D estate (my 1st diesel) in it, the 305 had 102k on it when i bought it @ 4yrs old, i ran it up to 275k, retired the shell and put the lump into the engineless 205 then put another 90k on it before selling it! 6000mls oil changes, thats the seceret!

4 years ago I gave my 1.9tdi (130) passat company car back at the end of its lease with 120k on the clock. The car is now local to me and going strong, looking immaculate! Not sure on the mileage now.

Agree with the earlier comments, those 130PD vw engines were fantastic and far more reliable than the 2.0 that replaced it...... i know.....i've got one!

Excellent! Don't think I'm going to ever have to 'change' the oil in my 205 - 6000 miles and it would be dry unless I kept refilling it.

My old 205 1.9 ran up to 130k miles though wasn't in best health

My Sunny GTI (N14) was as new (though with replacement rear shocks) at 100k

My Tipo is at 120k and the engine is perfect but the rest of the car isn't whilst my brothers has something like 240k again let down by the can't be bothered to fix it issue

If you can find one a Primera GT with the SR20DE would be a cracking mile muncher. They handle nicely, are pretty quick and don't go wrong. Nissan had much success with them in BTCC in the 90s. You could pick one up for a song too prhaps with leather and aircon.

Talking to a guy last night who's business it is to source cars for people. He gets invited to the one make auctions and he was saying that he went to one recently where Audi were flogging off some of the Allroads that they used for the Audi Assist service. The mileages ranged from 168,000 to just under 500,000 miles and the cars sold for between 5k and 8k. shocked.gif

Bought my Mondeo (petrol) with 24k on it. When I wrote it off 6 years later it had 146k on it regulary serviced and reasonably well looked after( till the accident!)

I think most modern engines petrol or diesel are pretty reliable. You should be ok with most cars.
