RNS-E & TMC - Free DVD Upgrade

Recommended Posts

[ QUOTE ]

Having said that the communication from Audi UK DOES say ALL A3, A4 with RNS-E (which has been extended to include A6 in later communications to individuals) - no mention of whether the RNS-E was OE fit or retrofit.

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess that is because Audi UK dealers don't officially retrofit these units. So they would be safe in assuming OE fit.

You have to wonder where all these retrofit units are coming from?

this is getting crazy now... blood pressure rising all over a dvd ... FIREdevil.gif my neighbour is after sales manager at audi and he said the dealers dont know what they are doing re the rns-e tmc upgrade, some will for do it for free , some will only do it if the system was factory fit and some will stll charge you regardless what the system is...... he said they are only doing now if it is a factory fit system ....

Nelson: Have to agree with that.

Dave: That's a very tenuous interpretation of this document. You could just as easily argue that an A3 or A4 with an RNS-E unit sitting on the passenger seat should qualify since it "has RNS-E". I think it's fairly obvious that they mean cars which were supplied with RNS-E from the factory and even a lawyer would have a hard time arguing otherwise, even if this were a legally binding document, which it's not.

I thought that there was no difference these days as long as whoever fits the accessory uses genuine Audi parts. This would be no different if it were attached to the engine and you got an independant to do it.

[/ QUOTE ]

Twisting the Block Exemption laws to the extreme there aren't we? wink.gif The only parts that are approved for Retrofit are Parts which Audi approve themselves. This is why C6 A6 Customers with Retrofit Sat Nav were allowed to take advantage of the TMC offer last year.

Having RNSE Retrofitted to your car in Audi UK's eyes is the equivilant or having an ECU Remap/Chip on your car. It's just a complete no go area.

I might just add; this offer is being paid for by Audi UK (not Audi GMBH) so I can't really understand why people are getting so 'eagar' about not having there Retrofit Units covered coffee.gif In my eyes they don't have to because they don't owe you anything sekret.gif

So why then are they only too pleased to fit it for you UHOH7.GIF

I've never seen any literature from Audi UK that approves this Retrofit. I was also emailing the Head of Audi UK Accessories department yesterday and he stated that due to possible wiring issues they don't approve the Retrofit. We know otherwise obviously.

If your Dealer is fitting it (my Centre also offers to supply and fit it) then good on them. But we don't expect any help from Audi Technical should we have a problem as they will litterally put the phone down on you. I had the same issue with another retrofit a couple of years back but I can't for the life of me remember which one it was tongue.gif

Do you really think a site like navplus.us would even exist if Audi approved RNSE after factory? This is the point I was trying to argue to them only yesterday. Especially as its so easy to fit them to the Concert/Symphony 2+ units now coffee.gif

But all that aside - I guess my point is why should they give Free Discs for something they don't even approve of tongue.gif

Hi John,

I bought my A4 from swindon audi and have retrofitted a RNS-E bought from Ebay. It came with a backup copy of the 2006 disc. do you know who you spoke to regarding the 2007 DVD upgrade as i will try and speak to them!, also did they take the disc? i ask as it may cause issues if they see a Verbaitum DVD+R disc in there! sekret.gif

cheers

Graham

I had a problem with the RNS-E in my S4 cab a few weeks ago(the disc got stuck in it) and I asked at my dealer if they could try to fix it rather than have me drive all the way up to Craigs house. They know only too well that it's a retro fit unit so the tech asked the the head of warenty what to do. He said he would ask Audi and let me know. Couple of hours later he rang me and said that Audi UK told them to just replace the unit as if it's an Audi part then it is covered.

As it happened Craig knew what was wrong with it and talked me through a very simple fix so I did it myself.

Where do people who retrofit these units get these units from? I'd suspect that atleast 90% are stolen units, so all this retrofitting is just encouraging more cars being broken into.

[/ QUOTE ]

Many of them are bought via Audi dealers in Europe - where prices are considerably lower then they are in the UK.

Your assumption that they are mostly stolen units is incorrect.

Um, I don't want to sound snooty or anythin, but the amount of stuff about E-bay retrofits in this thread means I have absolutely no idea what I'm now entitled to as a factory-fit owner.

It's a 2006 car which I bought last month ex-demo, with RNS-E fitted (but now a year old). So... leaving retrofits aside for a moment, does this mean I can just drive in to my Audi dealer and ask for a TMC upgrade, then, or what? confused.gif Sorry to sound clueless, but I'm a bit lost among the 47 pages so far ...

As gIzzE said, you are definitely entitled to the new discs but some dealers are still in the dark on this one so be prepared in case yours is less than helpful.

If they don't know what you're on about or try to claim there's a charge for the work, the detail they need to look for was released by Audi UK on 18th Dec 2006 on the "Desktop" system. Tell them to find this info and read it - all will be made clear smile.gif

thanks very much 169144-ok.gif. Rang them this morning, and they were mainly confused by me not having had a letter from Audi - but they rang back 10 mins later to say it's all fine, and now it's booked in on Thursday for a while-you-wait install 169144-ok.gif. Thanks for all help, I'll look forward to a traffic-free paradise, except of course for the bits where Ken Livingstone's changed the entire road into bus lanes.

Ok, I have read the 45 pages and followed this - but still not quite clear on one thing. Does the update of the unit come from the 2 discs - i.e. assuming you get the discs, the update happens from those discs, or is something else done by the dealer?

There should be 2 disks supplied. Disk 1 for West Europe and Disk 2 for East Europe. Only Disk 1 is required to perform the update.

[/ QUOTE ]

To quote Tom Peterkins e-mail to me yesterday, "there's only one disc"!!!! confused.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

What are you trying to say that there is only 1 disc because there certainly is 2 discs no matter what anyone says especially peterkins?
