Brabus
Now, I haven't been a fan of Mercs for a long time but I really, really need this car. Fixed carbonfibre roof, 394 BHP, uprated brakes and suspension...yum! Only bad points are autobox and traction control that can't be turned off.... P_G
Gets my vote too but are you sure it is 394 bhp, I thought the 55's produced more neddies than that! I wonder if they are producing an SLK 63?
Mollox
Yep, theres n/a and supercharged 55s
Ari
Read about this in Evo. Stupid car. They've gone all hard care, replaced the folding roof with a fixed one (to save weight), put carbon fibre door interiors in, racing seats, etc etc, all super hardcore. Then left it with an autobox!! Who the feck is so hardcore they want racing seats and the folding roof replaced with a fixed one, yet is happy to drive an auto! Genuinely bizarre... P_G
I hear the 7G-tronic box is very good though, almost as good as DSG / S-Tronic

Ari
[ QUOTE ] I hear the 7G-tronic box is very good though, almost as good as DSG / S-Tronic [/ QUOTE ] Sure, but it's still an auto box in an out and out street racer/track star of a car. They do the SLK 55 AMG for those who want a seriously quick cruiser version with all the comforts, why build a stripped out racer and leave it auto only? Madness, goes totally against the hardcore concept of the car. Put it another way, if they'd done an auto version (not paddleshift manual) of the M3CSL, do you think anyone would have bought it? Good for the market and it certainly sells. ?!?!?
Ari
But the McLaren SLR isn't marketed as a stripped out racer. It's a luxury ultra high performance car. The point is, this new SLK is a stripped out racer (they've even binned the folding roof, that's how uncompromised it is). Imagine Westfield or Radical bringing out an autobox. Imagine them only offering an autobox! It simply does not suit the intented specialist hardcore nature of the car (something the SLR never was). TP27
Does this mean that the SLK is no longer a Hairdresser's car ??
Ari
Not with an auto box it doesn't.
CarMad
Fact is you can do the roof for thousands. (A saw quotes for similar when I was at Bentley its not as much as you might think to get someone to build develop this). However a complete new gearbox could run into the millions unless you get something off the shelf which isn't Mercs way of doing things. They have done this type of thing before but have put in a racer only sequential box, but its not for road use.
garcon magnifique
The black series is for really hardcore hairdressers who do stuff like tattoos and piercings too...

[/ QUOTE ] I'm sure there are good reasons for leaving it with an autobox, and cost is probably the main one. But it still doesn't make it right. And I can't help thinking the kind of hard core driver for whom the "normal" SLK 55 AMG is not enough and is looking for something focussed to the max (as this is in all other ways) is going to demand a proper manual. Personally I think that the buyers of this car will prefer a 7G-tronic box to anything else.

I do agree though it is compromised and slightly pointless. If it was to be proper hardcore, they would have done more about the weight (its still a little fat arse!) and put a proper gear box in it. Fact is though that box will be lush to use everyday and will offer enough fun for the twisties. Its a shame you still cant fully turn the traction control off, but then they make up for that by offering Corsas I think. Thing is at that price id probably go down the GT3 route still. But id want something a bit more hard edged. Most probably wouldnt... Not that this will be a fast seller
Mwellsgarage
i think that is a cracking looking car and although it is regarded as a hair dressers car i would love to have one. I agree with the fact that it could do with a manual box though but no doubt it will sell to its specific demogarph very well
Brabus
I love the fact that is a mini-CLK DTM version which, let's face it, will be out of many people's reach both financially and in availability. [ QUOTE ] I do agree though it is compromised and slightly pointless. If it was to be proper hardcore, they would have done more about the weight (its still a little fat arse!) In defence of BMW engineering - the CSL is 110 kg lighter than the standard M3, whereas the SLK55 AMG Black Series is a paltry 45 kg lighter than the standard SLK55
