macdond
What road tax band is a 54 plate S4? If it is in band G, your better start saving now if you have one like me
gizze
Are you seriously worried about it anyway?? If you do 12k miles a year in an S4 you will be paying around £700 amonth for a 54 plate in overall costs, is an extra £15 a month going to really hurt you?? macdond
Gizze That is where the problem lies, I don't do the miles and really the car is for fun. If I was doing loads of miles then I would have a second car. In regards to £15.00 per month, that would buy a seriously nice bottle of shiraz so yep I think it does matter... macdond
The whole road tax argument sucks, why not get rid of road tax and add it to fuel duty. That way the people that actually use the roads actually pay for it. This idea works until you consider electric cars
rottenbend
Macdond The Band G only applies to vehicles manufactured/registered after 23rd March 2006. So your 54 S4 is in band F. I think... Vehicle Excise Duty
macdond
Really more hacked off about how unfair the tax is to the people that probably pay the most tax through income/fuel tax. Message for Gordon Brown

Good argument to buy a used early '06 RS4 Avant over an S5 for me then....

macdond
I would love an RS4 avant, however I can't justify the extra cost. I had an RS4 saloon for a week and I felt the steering had a more weighted feel, unlike the lighter S4 feel.

Scotty
The increase is about the same as 750 miles worth of petrol. Not the end of the world.
Scotty
...and after using the tax calculators they reckon I'll be £150-200 a year better off. Guess I'd better keep a Band G car then
SPLiiX
There will be a lot of very sick people with new or newish (after 23/03/06) cars! WOW - Sales will drop like a stone of cars with a G/KM more than 225!!!! Good job my car is a 2004 model as it is 228G/KM
gizze
I really don't think sales will drop, seriously, stop and think about if for a while, if you only do 5k miles a year it still doesn't hardly impact you compared with servicing, tyres, insurance, fuel and the big one...depreciation. Mollox
Here's a thought. If your car is pushing out 228 "Co2s" then its only just over. If it was rated at 224 then you'd pay less. I'm prepared to bet a tuner would be able to tweak your car to reduce the output by 4 Co2s to get you under the bracket. In which case - can we go back to the government and say "actually, if you check, my car actually pumps out 224 C02s so I should pay less".... Of course that won't work but ethically, it should. Equally, remapped cars tend to achieve more efficient burns (closer to stoichometric burn) and so have overall improved fuel consumption. Do you reckon remapping affects Co2 output too? Hmm... richspeight
Agree with everyone here. The whole 'fixed cost' taxes on cars really annoy me. Not just 'road tax', but the increased parking tax on cars in Richmond too. Firstly, I don't drive my car much. I 'pollute' far less than a Toyota Pious driver (smug bastards that they are) who does 15k a year. Plus, my car doesn't pollute at all while it's parked! B*stard goverment... [/ QUOTE ] If you change the colour of your car you can get it changed on your log book! I fyou change the engine you have to inform DVLA and your log book would be changed so I think that yes it could be done. I would say that once you do do it you would need to take it for one of those special MOT thingy's that Imports have to get before they get a UK log book. Daz
[ QUOTE ] Good argument to buy a used early '06 RS4 Avant over an S5 for me then.... [/ QUOTE ] Err, they didn't do any early '06 RS4 Avants. All Avants are registered after 23rd March 2006 (started arriving in the UK in July) so will be Band G. It would be possible to get an early Saloon though, they did start arrving in Feb/March.

DaveJ
Like the rest of the budget this change makes almost no difference. Compared to fuel prices / depreciation etc etc. Its totally insignificant. I seriously dont get what all the fuss about. How can a few hundred quid makes a difference to owning a 50k car which does 18MPG????
gizze
I agree, totally bizarre. Lets say you only do £6k miles a year, the repaymnets will cost you £750 a month on an RS4 if the depreciation stays low and they hold their value, more like £950 a month if they don't. Servicing and tyres work out around £50 a month on that mileage, and fuel is £160 a month. So you are looking at around £960-1160 a month to run an RS4 at 6k miles a year with no road tax, or £990-1190 a month with road tax at £400 a year. Is it really that big a deal?
