I can't believe this thread has got so much going on between Audi and BMW owners. The whole point of having the choice between different manufacturers and models is exactly that. Choice. Each to their own.

Chill out guys. It's Friday!

And relaaaaax.... 169144-ok.gif

Debadge the thing, and 80% of people would walk right past it (where they'd laugh at the c0ck in the M3)

And once again, the Audi driver puts his thoughts over regarding the handling and performance differences elegantly and wins the argument for the RS4 in one line.

Wonder about what exactly? No disrespect but that is exactly how you are with BMWs coffee.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Not at all. I was referring to the fact that to me it seems a little odd to deliberately obscure whole segments of a car, judge each one's aesthetics in isolation and then base an opinion solely on that, as that poster clearly had done. Surely a car's design is more than a sum of its parts? One could use this approach with virtually any car on the road - BMWs included - and reach similar conclusions. Car designers already have a tough enough job 'pleasing all of the people all of the time' without having their work dissected to that sort of degree. To say that the RS4 is "a disaster" purely because some elements of its design may resemble those of other cars in the range is frankly ridiculous IMO, and it was that to which my "you've got to wonder" comment was directed.

The BM3W comment is just tripe. To call the RS4 a disaster is just typical of the blinkered view you get on there all too often. Its just the equivalent of here at times where open mindedness is concerned.

That said, I do accept there is more of a balance on here.

Albeit still steeply slanted towards Innswhereveritis. 169144-ok.gif

Besides, BM3W has become a bit of a chavheaven these days. Too many older E46 M3's falling into...aw I'd best not say it. Much of the better contingent is still there, but I find it a chore to have to trawl through questions that have been answered a billion times by more intelligent people in the past. I've said enough. ooo.gif

Is it just the image thing with BMWs for most of you??

That I do totally understand, and if it is that is fine, but slagging off the drive for lack of AWD I just don't get?

I would be interested in how many of these cars everyone has owned?

I will only slag a car off that I have onwed, and lived with, I can't knock something that I haven't had any experience off. Personally I hate the Subarus, EVO's etc. etc. but that is based purely on the pre conceived image I have built up about them, so I would never say that the BMW is a better a drive as I just don't know??

So is it just a case of not liking the overall image??

I dont think BMWs have a bad image and never have.

That said I have only ever been partial to the fast ones. Spending all that money on a bottom spec 3 series I can never understand when you could have a well specced Gti.

In fact the only manafacturors that to me have a bad image are:

Mercadies - pipe and slippers, too much to go wrong - bit glitsy.

Ferrari - too flash, terrible service and make you feel part of a cult (make up for it in drive none the less)

Lambo - trying to hard and not getting anywhere really IMHO.

Bucrappi -simply WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Koniegsiegg - crap crap crap

Given the choice I would have to go for the RS4. I'm not a die hard VAG owner. However, for every day conditions and the great british climate and deteriorating road surfaces I reckon the 4wd is very important. I know some purists out there believe they will only drive a rwd performance car but I sometimes doubt these individuals ability to be able to competently 'drive' a rwd car for it to make a difference.

I think that the BMW is a better looking car (in M3 guise at least) but that's not quite enough to swing it for me. grin.gif

It's kinda interesting to compare the 2 from a visual standpoint. I really like the back end on the new M3 but the front bumper is awful. Also a shame that the press pics have the 18's instead of the 19's.

Whatever floats your boat I guess. Here's some more side by sides:

Some quality pics there.

I just think the RS4 oozes much more style and a better look than the M3.

IMO that is just plain wrong.

My CSL is RWD and in the dry I found it to go miles quicker down the twisties without getting twitchy than the RS4.

If the new M3 is anything like it should be quicker.

The 4wd may compensate for the engine way over the front wheels and the great weight to an extent - but no way makes up for it in full.

In the wet I cant comment as ive never driven the RS4 in those conditions - but I can safely say the CSL is in a totally different league to the R32.

Those that say RWD is too hard in real world conditions cant have driven a proper example.

People with these cars may talk about sideways action but truth be told that only happens when a) you floor it out a corner and purposely do it or b) you are going so fast round a corner any Audi will be a considerable distance behind.

I would never say any Audi sucks the life out a drive. I loved my R32 and really class it as one of the best cars I have driven (and luckily driven alot) but the CSL is a whole diffrent ball game. I dont expect the new M3 to be anything like the CSL in terms of rawness or the need of ability - I really cant see why it will be any harder to drive than the RS4...

I am sure quattro owners start this nonsense, and this was exactly why I was asking people to be honest whether it was about image more than drive. An M3 will go just as fast in the wet as it will in the dry, I think people give it too much respect, I took over a month before I started to really push it, it felt more twitchy but the truth was the more you pushed it the more it dug its heals in.

Is it the tail happy nature of the M3 that people are talking about when they say Quattro is better for the British weather?? Because by the time the back end comes out on a BMW the RS4 would have already understeered into a wall, and I am being completely serious about that, the only time the back end wold come out is if you were really trying to make it or being a bit silly.

I am sure that it is like Chinese whispers, one person says the RS4 is far better for the wet weather and 5 others pass that on, and before you know it, it's fact!

It is not about being able to drive a RWD to its limits, it is about having sme serious fun on twisty roads at 50mph, and in an RS4 that isn't going to happen, you need to be doing 80mph for the excitemnet to kick in.

It isn't just the RS4, the M5/6 are the same, by tghe time you feel alive you are doing 120mph and into license loosing speeds, I need to be getting that buzz without getting into those silly speeds, and that is why the M3 is the car that gets my vote.

Seriously, take one out and see what you think, it's like having a road legal go kart when you press the sport button and a luxury German autobahn mile muncher when you turn it off. 169144-ok.gif

But looking at the votes on this Audi forum - seems like we are a minority! yelrotflmao.gif

Wow, thats such a surprise.yelrotflmao.gif

The votes are 3 out towards the RS4... what does that prove?!? One car people know about and have knowledge of, the other is currently pure speculation. Or are we meant to be able to see into the future and read the reviews.

I voted for the RS4, I want something I can live with everyday and as stated I like Saloons, simple as that. No Audi bias here thanks. 169144-ok.gifpengy.gif

And you dont want to be seen as a drug dealer either which you certainly do if you buy an M3 (IMHO of course) 169144-ok.gif

I'm pretty shallow with it comes to cars...Looks are pretty high on my check list. I just don't get the styling most of the time when it comes to BMWs. Simple as that. It doesn't appeal to me in the same way Audi styling does(most of the time any way).

Looking at the new M3 there's just too many uninspired design elements on it IMO, as though they didn't quite know when to stop designing it. As a peice of car design it doesn't seem as well thought through as the RS4.

I guess what I'm trying to say can be summed up by comparing the wing mirrors on the 2 cars. Those on the M3 are everything I dislike about BMW styling, those on the Audi are a different story.

I'd happily drive both though.
