ashleyadam
Right my 2 pennies worth - Estate RS4 - I've never liked the 3 series touring although still a good car. Coupe M3 - Again never liked RS4 Saloon although still a good car. The only loyalty's I have are to my pocket and my family, although I've never owned a BMW previously because I have never liked the interiors - But all forgotten with New Car and Engine. Adam
we find the RS4 saloon boot huge - swallows the huge bugaboo buggy, all the other baby crap plus 3 good size bags + bits and bobs I would actually prefer the rear seats to have been mounted a few inches back, losing boot but gaining legroom

mark88
Perhaps it's just my tastes but I look at the press pics of the new M3 and the press pics of the RS4 and in terms of aesthetics the RS4 wipes the floor with the BMW. I had a look at that article while I was in Asda, some nice shots of a Sprint Blue RS4! And if you wanna start comparing the cars side by side, it's best to use the right shots eh ;-)

Scotty
I voted for the M3. A few reasons : [1] I now find myself looking at more driver focused cars. [2] BMW have now caught up with the fact that V8 ownership is grin inducing [3] The current A4 range is effectively end of life [4] I think RS4 residuals will be much worse than M3s [5] An M3 Touring seems to tick most of the boxes I need [6] The RS4 isn't different enough to my S4 to make me change. Note - I've not used the word 'better' in any of my selection criteria. If a better car is one that can get you from A to B the quickest then in most peoples hands it will probably still be the RS4....but I'm now looking for more of a spark. I'm still pondering getting a toy/track car but I can't help thinking that an M3 Touring with electronically adjustable suspension would solve my dilemma. EssFour
Agree the RS4 looks better. What I find off putting about the new M3 are the horrible visible panel joins. I.e. front bumper to front wing, door sill, rear panel and rear bumper. Looks like an airfix model. Shame because I actually like the E46 coupe shape. Cris
It might just be me but every shot I see of the M3 has it sat too low. Looks like a 17 year old's Saxo outside a McDrivethrough. Surely BMW haven't released a car based on Lax Flower's readers wants???

mark88
It's kinda interesting to compare the 2 from a visual standpoint. I really like the back end on the new M3 but the front bumper is awful. Also a shame that the press pics have the 18's instead of the 19's. Whatever floats your boat I guess. Here's some more side by sides: more... http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133639-2.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133642-3.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133643-4.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133644-5.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133645-6.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133646-7.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133649-8.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133650-9.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133651-10.jpg http://www.tyresmoke.net/attachments/1133652-11.jpg

[/ QUOTE ] To me it looks like any other A4 (granted with big wheels and slightly flaired arches), the M3 looks like it's own thing - different to the regular 3 series coupe. Different strokes and that, but on every item other than the interior (where I think the RS4 wins hands down), I would go with the M3

NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] Those who are saying the M3 interior is dull, dont know about you but the current B7 interior is just about as boring as it gets! All thats different in the RS4 is the steering wheel, cf trim and seats. [/ QUOTE ] I was wondering if someone would say that. The RS4 interior isn't that far removed from any standard A4 at all. Nor is the M3's from a 3-series. Would we really expect them to be though? However, in respect of all this 4WD versus RWD argument...in my opinion it is VASTLY overplayed. The times when Quattro is of true benefit are few and far between. I managed flooded roads, sheeting rain and blizzards of snow on a recent 900+ mile trip. Anyone who was there will concur - it was atrocious. Yet, only for 5 miles of that trip did I have to ease off - and that was behind 2 x new R32's in my barge....and I know for certain if I'd have been in one of my former M3's I could have quite easily held the car behind them on the twisties. I have nothing against Quattro. I like the RS4. I think Daz's looks superb, Dom's Avant looks ultra-mean and in general believe them to be a highly desireable car. However, if I was choosing, I'd probably choose an M3 - but thats because its slightly more raw (the prediction game is deangerous, I know, but its nigh on certain) appeal is for me. Finally though, lets stop all this 'non-aggressive, anonymous, stealthy' bollocks can we? The RS4 is none of those. They stand out a mile. Whats more, I do tend to giggle when I hear it is an argument and then, a few months down the line, we find that the people who picked these cars that are said to be more stealthy/anonymous purposes....go and fit whacking great exhaust systems to them! NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] They may stand out a mile to the trained eye, but not to the average Audiphile intent on ignoring the fact the RS4 is no longer the stealthy looker it was, who ignores the wheels, the flared arches, the large twin exhausts and the badges front and back for a convenient, yet completely non-sensical, observation. [/ QUOTE ] Agreed.

I like you think the new M3 will be more the drivers car - but those seats dont look as if they would hold you in place and look as boring as fook IMO. BMW could have done better. Mook
I can't believe this thread has got so much going on between Audi and BMW owners. The whole point of having the choice between different manufacturers and models is exactly that. Choice. Each to their own. Chill out guys. It's Friday! And relaaaaax....
