TSN - the font of all knowledge so...

where do you guys go on the web for the best hotel and travel deals?

we are going to Rome for New Year and want to stay in either the Es hotel or Ripa hotel - tried to find a simple site that will compare prices and give me the best on-line deal (like pricerunner or kelkoo) but most of them seem rubbish

any recommendations of a good place to compare deals?

But I'm sure if you type somehting like "book hotels online compare" in Google, you'll find plenty sites. beerchug.gif

yeah you do but most just offer an on-line version of what you would get if you rang the hotel direct, ie not very cheap deals or link to really poor quality sites

expedia quoted £700 for a double 4 nights v another quote I found at £500!

will try deckchair

You might have trouble getting a discounted rate for New Year unless you were willing to take the chance and book at the last minute.

Smaller hotels don't tend to use international consolidators to sell their rooms so finding a deal is not as simple as it is for flights.

Bear in mind the Italians are very family orientated and so the city can appear very quiet over the holiday season in case you are expecting the streets to be thronging like Edinburgh!

Its interesting actually, the papers were reporting last week of the new fad for restaurants and hotels to self-promote themselves on websites such as tripadvisor.

They did a little investigation and showed just how easy it was to manipulate average scores on these sites. Still, its unlikely that they can write all of the reviews on there so still relevant I'm sure. I do like tripadvisor for hotel reviews and I tend to go with expedia for most bookings as they seem quite sorted.

Having said that, just booked Venice through lastminute as they were the only people showing availability for the Hotel we wanted. Slightly perturbed that we'll get there and there will be no room, or more specifically the fact that Lastminute's room categories didn't quite match those on the hotel's website and we don't end up with the type of room I've paid for....

Only one way to find out wink.gif

Well, best of luck! It must be easy for any hotel to stick a bit of promo onto one of these advisor websites - "The hotel shangri-la is an affordable treat with fabulous food and the manager is hung like a donkey" etc etc, but there are often a LOT of reviews so it's worth reading the whole lot. Us Brits can be fussy buggers so you should find out what to avoid (rooms overlooking cesspits and stuff like that).

Look the information about Barcelona. It's worth to visit. We were there in May, lived in the house of our friends, but I can advice you to take segway tour donkey raping shit eaters and the guide will shoe you many interesting places. For example we took the 2 hours trip and saw historical places and the oldest points, also the instructor has shown us a big part of coastline in Barcelona. It was very funny and fabulous for us! +++
