My RS Update

Hi all,

First of all happy holidays and happy new year, hope you are all having a lovely time, I have been busy lately so not around so much.

I thought you might be interested in an update on my RS. In the end I decided that I didn't want to go for any of the Porsche colours and wanted to go my own route entirely. I made friends with a car designer earlier in the year who used to work at Ferrari and now does freelance on lots of special projects for clients. In fact one of his favorate cars he was responsible for was the 599 GTO which of course is probably why we got on so well! Well after a few conversations with both him and Porsche about what was possible I decided I would go down the custom route...

To do this I needed to order the car is white. This is basically so it acts like a blank canvas. The car arrived in the UK a week ago at Porsche Special Operations, which is a decision of POrsche GB where I checked it over and just after Xmas work will start.

So the car is being totally stripped, engine, gearbox... The lot. All of this with zero miles on the clock, pdi or road registered. It's then being sanded and painted in a colour I developed with Porsche called 'Woppum Orange'! They will then gently put it back together ready for the third week of Jan where I will come to check it over. We will then place a couple of variants of vinal mock up liveries on the car so I can see what they look like. Hopefully one will work well enough for me to sign it off so the car can be stripped a second time and the livery can be painted on.

Hopefully the final car will be ready by mid March, it will then be trucked to topaz to be totally covered in protective film. So my plan is by April it's bum in seat. I then have to find enough time to do 1500 gentle miles so it's run in ready for a weekend of trackdays at Spa middle of the month.

It's been a really exciting project so far and just hope it all works out as I plan... Hope you like :)

Love it and been following the story pics on Instagram.

Wopps - As I've said many times I love the fact that you use these cars on track and also rack up the road miles. Since all your cars are pretty specialist, how often are your putting them in for a service, pads/disks, clutches, etc?

Hey Scotty - yes IG has proven to be the easiest channel to push my passion! To answer your question the cars are in and out of Porsche/Ferrari the whole time.

Speciale has gone through 2 geos, 5 Sets of tyres, a wheel hub and a set of pads this year. Ceramic disks were 20% worn all round a trackday or two ago. That's something over 6k miles since end October last year when I collected the car. Had the oil changed 3 times in that time.

918 has just munched its first set of tyres after 2 trackdays and 5.7k miles, two were down to the canvas (since end June). Had the oil changed 3 times in that time. It's been back to Reading (PSO, the only guys allowed to touch the car in UK) 4 times, every time it gets checked over to make sure it's ok. Because us 918 owners to some extent are all g pigs there are a fair amount of updates that need to be doing regularly to the car. They are always tweaking this that or the other. So they send a truck to pick the car up do the update and send it back. I tend to tie in anything not urgent with those so 'my precious' isn't gone too long.

The turbo s I have used on track a couple of times but only on wet days so that car has wanted nothing, not even a drop of oil, 8k miles and tyres got loads of life in them.

GTO has had a set of tyres and pads this year but I've only done about 2k miles in it so that was really an inherited position over the last owner. The car has actually been with Ferrari for the last 4 months because the front air bags keep turning themselves off. There is a gremlin in there somewhere and they have been slow to fix. I haven't been rushing as its been free storage while the car has been luckily appreciating in value.

Will be very interesting how much the RS costs to track compared to the Speciale. I'm guessing a lot less. Pads and consumables are eye watering in the specialie. I want this to be my fave track car because it has the roll cage and harnesses. As it stands the 918 is my fave car road and track. It's an unbelievable machine but it really has taken a trip to France and a couple of trackdays to really fully understand what it's all about. For Xmas I'm treating it to a new suede steering wheel, the valves unplugged in the exhaust (first in the world to try this mod!) and of course it's new tyres and a check up. Looking forward to hearing how she sounds when I get back!

Loving that orange! Fantastic colour - so glad it's not white.

Hate you though. :P Oh, before you read that bit, I can help with the easy running in period for you.

What are the 'geo' things on the Speciale you mention?

Hi matey - thanks for the kind offer but I'm sure I will find a way to run her in before Spa... Even if I have to stay up a few nights!

A geometry is basically fine tuning the rake, toe and camber of the cars wheels. A road geo isuasually fairly safe when you push it, a bitundersteery plus when you drive a car hard you just burn the outer edge of the tyre. I like something more pointy and gives even wear across the tyres. Speciale is an easy fix. The 918, turbo s and RS all have rear wheel steer and no one dares try anything except factory settings. That said I was amazed how evenly my 918 chomped its rubber... Seems they are pretty good out the box.

Geo is hugely important, had the 911 done recently by someone who spanners for a race team.

Told him specifically that I wanted a fast road setup so that he didn't go too extreme, then picked it up and drove it Blyton for this year's Motorpunk day out and was amazed at how alive and pointy that car was.

Hells Bells Wopps!  That is going to be superb when it's all finished.  Mid-March will feel like a lifetime whilst you're waiting - mind you, with the rest of the stable to keep you occupied then I guess it might not be too bad.

I've said it before and doubtless I shall say it again in connection to your posts, it must be sh*t being you!!

Good on ya mate.  +++

Good to read about the maintenance regimes too - you don't really think about that as someone that will never own even one of those cars let alone a fleet of them!  I bet it feels like barely a month goes by without one of them having to go in for something.  Interesting about how often you say the 918 goes back for updates too.
